OH-Senate: UAW endorses Hackett for Senate.
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 02:26 PM by nickshepDEM
Suprise endorsement for political newcomer signals union split

WASHINGTON - Ohio's largest labor union endorsed political newcomer Paul Hackett on Friday in his Democratic primary race for U.S. Senate against recognized labor champion Rep. Sherrod Brown, a surprising move that signals a potentially damaging a split in union support.

The United Auto Workers told The Associated Press that its 17 area councils and 10 at-large representatives had voted 26-1 for Hackett, two days after the Cleveland AFL-CIO voted to continue its long-standing practice of backing Brown.
...

He said Hackett, an Iraq war veteran, showed he had the charisma and crossover appeal when he got 48 percent of the vote in a special congressional election this summer, in one of the most conservative districts in the country.

Brown said he would be undeterred by the news.

1. That's great news. I dont live in OH, but I really like Hackett.
I saw a poll a week or so ago that said he was pretty far behind though. Has that changed?

2. Here's my concern...
Hackett is actually not a true liberal. He is borderline Republican on many issues. What will his voting be like?

Don't get me wrong..It's not that I don't like Hackett, but it's that I already have a Republican Rep. who the UAW backed and he's siding with the thugs on everything instead of being the independent and 'moderate' voice he promised.

3. It must also be stated that he is quite liberal on other issues.
I don't demand orthodoxy. Besides, a regular old-school liberal simply can't be elected in Ohio.

4. That's not true
The only issue I've really seen him take a conservative stance on is gun control. He's pro-gay marriage, pro-choice, pro-Labor, anti-Iraq War. Plus, that gun control position, if he wins the primary, will be a uge benefit.

7. Yes, and he is also good on environmental issues.
I believe I read he's been driving a hybrid car since 2000. (Along with his motorcycle, of course.)

6. What is your idea of a true liberal?
I don't think anybody could ever find a person that would vote the way you want them to every time. I think Hackett has a lot to learn but would make a fine Senator. At least he knows the dangers of war and could help to get us out of Iraq. I think the first thing that should enters all the minds of all the dems is to stop the killing.

9. I wouldn't want to be the UAW if Brown wins
I don't really have a position on the Brown vs Hackett race but I think the UAW owes Brown alot. Brown has been one of organized labors best friends for years. Brown deserved better than he got from those people.

10. Will Paul Hackett support making cars and trucks more fuel efficient?
A Question Hackett Needs to Answer

...if he is elected to the U.S. Senate? That's the question, and if you read on, you'll see why it needs to be asked and answered right now.

Yesterday, the UAW endorsed Paul Hackett for U.S. Senate. I'm not sure how important this is for the primary, but it surprised me because of Sherrod Brown's long and strong relationship with labor.

This endorsement raises a serious question. And since I just spent four hours researching this, I hope you'll read on.

****

My summary: of all the positions that the UAW took political issues on, and of all the votes that the UAW judged Sherrod Brown on, fuel economy is the only one they disagreed with Brown on. Did Hackett make a secret agreement to vote against increased fuel economy?

My commentary: We could get that with Mike Dewine.
