Faux's Chris Wallace says his father-"lost it" needs"a competence hearing"
From Americablog:

"60 Minutes'" Mike Wallace's son is an idiot. Sad.

Apparently conservative family values no longer include respecting your parents. Sad.

From the uber-conservative tabloid Newsmax:

"Fox News Sunday" anchorman Chris Wallace says father Mike Wallace has "lost it" - after the legendary CBS newsman told the Boston Globe last week that the fact George Bush had been elected president shows America is "-up."

"He's lost it. The man has lost it. What can I say," the younger Wallace lamented to WRKO Boston radio host Howie Carr on Friday.

"He's 87-years old and things have set in," the Fox anchor continued. "I mean, we're going to have a competence hearing pretty soon."

Wallace Jr. quickly dispelled any notion that he was joking. When Carr suggested that his comments were likely to be covered by NewsMax, he responded: "You know what? Fine. Go ahead. Call them. That's fine. I'll stand by that."

Returning to the topic of his father's competence, Wallace Jr. explained: "He's checked out. I don't understand it," beyond the fact that Wallace Sr. has "problems with the war."

"I don't know why he said what he said," he added.

On Thursday, the elder Wallace told the Boston Globe that if he had the chance to interview President Bush, he'd ask:

"What in the world prepared you to be the commander in chief of the largest superpower in the world? In your background, Mr. President, you apparently were incurious. You didn't want to travel. You knew very little about the military. . . . The governor of Texas doesn't have the kind of power that some governors have. . . . Why do you think they nominated you? . . . Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that the country is so up?"

Still, despite his criticism, Wallace Jr. seems to have inherited some of his father's shoot-from-the-lip-style.

Asked about DNC chair Howard Dean's recent prediction that the U.S. would lose the war in Iraq, Wallace told Carr:

"We are in a war. We do have 150,000-plus American soldiers over there. I mean, it's Tokyo Rose, for God sakes, going on radio saying we can't win the war."

No Chris, Tokyo Rose is a Republican who throws our troops' lives away like a dirty old kleenex for a war that's a lie and a disaster, rather than volunteering to go over and fight themselves.

his father's shoes. Of course he admires *. He's just as stupid as *, and just as bought and paid for. Oh, and by the way, Chris, it's competency hearing, not competence hearing. Idiot. Now go plant your lips where they are usually planted, and leave your father alone.

He should be so ashamed of himself. My dad passed away two years ago and not a day goes by that I don't miss him. To disrespect his father in public is beneath contempt.

10. Wallace must see a kindred spirit in Bush.
Another son of priveledge who got to where he is now by riding the coattails of his father.

I remember a while ago Mike was on Fox News Sunday talking to Chris about his new book and at the end of the interview Mike told Chris that he loved him and Chris seemed, to say the least, freaked out. I thought, "Now this is odd." Very telling.

Chris is too chicken to show a George W. Bush clip admitting the war on terror cannot be won, (while he was being showcased as a resolute leader at a time of national peril.) So Chris shows a clip of Howard Dean, "cleaning up his act" as he put it" and again, Bush gets another free ride. Here's to you Chris:

:+ :puke: Chris, you surely do play dirty politics!

13. So, are things now getting to the point
where people will be able to have their family members declared incompetent on the basis of political speech with which they disagree? Maybe we'll become like the Soviet Union, where dissenting views were considered a disease and could land you in a mental hospital. I really want to see where this is going.

Frankly, I had no idea Mike Wallace was that old. He seems pretty on top of it to me.

46. He did fine on the Diane Rehm show recently.
He occasionally rambled and asked her to snap him back to the topic, but anyone over 40 (and quite a few people younger than that) might have done the same thing, particularly if they had as many good stories to tell as he has.

He admitted on the show that he had been a workaholic earlier in his career, and several marriages terminated as a result. I'm sure that didn't make him a great father. But that doesn't entitle his son to make this type of comment publicly.

Mike Wallace is definitely no liberal. But his son has had nothing close to as distinguished a career as his father. Do you think that has anything to do with it?

26. Actually,
Mike Wallace participated in a documentary detailing the lives and recovery of several patients struggling with mental illness. He was one of the patients. I can't remember if he was just taking medication or if he was one of the ones that received ECT. I think he was just taking meds.

He felt that his name recognition would lend credibility to the issue.

He may very well have "lost it" but I'm not sure the war has anything to do with his problems.

Chris Wallace will regret his words when he gets a little older, no doubt. Nobody really respects a person who will question his father's sanity to a national audience. I think it makes him look like a real idiot. Too bad he didn't inherit his father's grey matter.

43. Some amateur psychology
Looking at this, I would like to venture some speculation about what might be going on with Chris Wallace and his father. I am no psychologist myself, so you can take this for what it is worth.

I am writing this as one who had a very difficult father, and who has been in therapy dealing with issues having to do with my father. I am also familiar with the works of psychotherapists Alice Miller and Susan Forward, whose writings have been helpful to me. Alice Miller has written a number of books about the profound influence of a person’s childhood and childhood mistreatment on the rest of a person’s life. Susan Forward has written a number of books, including one called Toxic Parents, in which she includes practical suggestions for confronting toxic parents.

Links to Alice Miller's web sites:

http://www.naturalchild.com/alice_miller/

http://www.alice-miller.com/sujet/eng.htm

Links to Susan Forward's web site:

http://www.susanforward.com/

I do not know for sure, but I strongly suspect that Mike Wallace might have been a very difficult father. I would not be at all surprised if he was; I would be surprised if he was not.

Assuming that Mike Wallace was a difficult father, I am speculating that Chris Wallace internalized his father from the time he was little, and never questioned his upbringing. He has, I would guess, always carried his difficult childhood father in his head.

Having grown up, Chris Wallace now has a surrogate father in the person of Fox News and the right wing, which now takes the place of his childhood father. And he now judges others, including his own real father, according to the values and dictates of his surrogate father.

What would be essential for Chris Wallace (or anybody who has had a difficult parent or parents) would be a real awareness of what his father did when he was a child, and, if appropriate, a real confrontation with his father. (An actual confrontation might not be appropriate in all cases, and of course is not possible when a parent is dead.)

Unfortunately – unfortunately especially for Chris Wallace – attacking his father for his father’s political beliefs that go against those of Fox News, i.e. Chris’ surrogate father, is not in any way a genuine confrontation with his real father, or with the father of his childhood.

Again, take this for what it is worth. Just my own opinion.
