Ever wonder what an NBA player and a ref are talking about away from the ball? There are conversations going on all the time during dead ball situations where a player sidles up to the ref and says a few words. If you're following the ball, like the TV cameras always do, you'll miss it. But when Tim Duncan gets next to Bernie Fryer or Steve Javie, he's quietly telling the ref that Kobe's taking an extra step out on the wing just before he makes his move to the basket. Next time downcourt, whaddya know? Kobe gets called for traveling just before cruising down the lane for a thunder dunk.
Rummy and his pals are working the refs: Their base and the news commentators. This palaver about a spike in violence that is no real spike, just more of the same, makes sure that the base and the pundits see things just the way Rummy and the corrupt Bush administration want them to see them. Something unusual, something transient, something that will be remedied soon. A few days later, when 10 people die instead of 15 people, someone will dutifully report that the Bush plan is once again working beautifully.
And so it is, as once again people fall for the Bush administration line instead of believing their own eyes.
