The only safe play is to go on offense on the Iraq War. Defenses will fail. The Republicans are succeeding in making the Dems partially culpable for the disaster. They are succeeding in making the issue one of bad intelligence instead of bad faith. Asserting lamely "You lied to me" won't cut it, Dems. We need to throw punches and bite some ears.
I believe Dems should be loudly calling for proof that Bush exhausted alternatives to war and planned for the post-war. We should not be trying to avoid responsibility for voting for the IWR. That falls under a weak category of behavior Nietzsche called "committing a cowardice against one's own acts." To complain we were duped without kicking the ass of the duper marks us as victims, not leaders.
The President of the United States gave assurances to Congress. He must now prove that he kept his side of the bargain. We need written and testimonial evidence that Bush sought alternatives to war and that he planned carefully for the post war. Show us the memos. Show us the plans. I don't think they can.
We are letting them slide by with abrasions and bruises when their political careers should be in the morgue. We need to stay vigilant. The good guys, the American people who want unity, sense, and peace in their lives must be won over. The bad guys, the corporate shill Republicans playing us all like a bunch of Indian casino "troglodytes" must be conquered. Time to grow up like Murtha did.
