Can somebody please explain to me what Clinton said today?
I took a nap earlier and when I woke up I was seeing various threads saying all sorts of things. Now that things have settled, please tell me what was what with Big Dog.

3. It was something like
saying that Kerry has been strong on national security, welfare reform, etc. He was simply saying nice things about Kerry. Some of the more dense pundits called it an endorsement.

7. Thanks
Did he have anything else to say? Unfortunately, my TV is across from my bed and I kept nodding off waiting for him to come up.

14. "good" was the word he used to describe Kerry.
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 10:51 PM by AP
Basically, he was saying that Kerry was good on a list of issues he thought were important, but he said he thinks the field is great and nobody is out of it. If anything, I think he was probably warniing people not to fall in line too soon, which should give hope to Clark and Edwards supporters.

5. He slammed repups
It was a first in many years that a retired president spoke out like this. I think he wants to remain an integral part of the future politic.

10. I think he SHOULD speak up. These are extraordinary times and
he is very influential over a lot of people, and he has the experience of having been there and unlike the current incumbent, aware of all the complexities. His admin. has also been criticized about Iraq and other matters and he has every right to address that if he chooses to. I am glad that he is refraining from endorsing anyone, but I think he should go after anyone on the Repug. side or any policy issue he wants to talk about.

6. Really not much
It was a big deal about nothing. Clinton defended Kerry saying that he thought Kerry could win across the country and didn't buy the "too liberal" tag. Also, I'm no Clark supporter, but that line today from him in Tulsa -that's in your sig line- is a classic.

16. Here is the link to the transcript so you can read it Jerseycoa

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WILLIAM J. CLINTON, FMR. PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: All I know is, when I was trying to reverse 12 years of what we've had for the last 4, where we were taxing less and spending more, it's fun in the short run. But it's a recipe for disaster. And we were running this huge deficit. He was there to help. And so, I think it's going to be -- he was good on security, good on fiscal responsibility, good on welfare reform. And I still think we got a good feel.

And by the way, you may know what's going to happen, but I don't. And I like all these people. I admire them. They made a contribution to whatever good I was able to do for the American people, and I'm not going to get involved in it. But I don't think it's fair to say he can't be elected or that he's too far to the left.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

17. I have the answer!
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 11:14 PM by copithorne
I saw him on CNN answering a question.

He said that Kerry supported fiscal responsibility when he helped end the budget deficit. He said he was also good on national security.

He said he wasn't going to get involved in the race. He said it was a great field of candidates. He had a big smile on his face.

He said that he didn't believe "these things people were saying about him being unelectable or too liberal."

(Which I actually took as a masterful way of saying he was unelectable and too liberal.)

He didn't say much of anything.

18. He basically said that Kerry wasn't the left-wing freak show the GOP
claimed he was.

He said the same thing about Dean back when he was the flavor of the month.

Of course, if Edwards were the nominee, we wouldn't need Clinton to go rushing to his defense.
