How Many Straight Folks Would Climb Aboard A Ford Boycott?
"I pledge not to buy any Ford products whatsoever until they stop bowing to the wishes of fundamentalist bigots."

If the national gay organizations called for a Nationwide boycott of Ford (including Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo), how many straight folks would participate?

And how many union groups would eventually join in?

And how many environmental groups would eventually join in?

And how many women's organizations would eventually join in?

Would the Blue half of this country finally stand up to the naked bigotry of the fundamentalist extremists and take a unified stand on behalf of their gay brothers and sisters?

Listen up, Ford. This is the sound of car sales dropping through the floor.

Keep this thread kicked. Maybe we can send it on to Ford Motor Company.

50. Yeah that's why we got one! :)
Then the thing started having problems within two weeks of getting it (new cv boots, motor mounts, stereo problems, and the door handle broke, now there is a clicking noise when we use the heat). The few days that it was working with no problems were nice though-- it drives smooth and I feel really safe in it compared to my little 93 civic.

Well, I would still get involved in the boycott. It's disgusting that a big so called American company would deliberatly discriminate against any people.

Who will the hate groups target next?

38. Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin
make up all of Ford's divisions. Volvo will continue to be a GLBT supportive division with advertising and sponsorship of events and Ford will hope few people notice that they are a Ford subsidiary. GM owns Saab and has large stakes in Subaru, Hyundai and Kia. Renault owns a chunk of Nissan. VW, Audi and Porsche are linked. BMW owns Rolls Royce and Bentley. The auto business is quite complex and the name on the car tells you very little about who the owner is or where it was made. Ford sells Mexican made Fords, American made Mazdas and Belgian made Volvos. Is your head spinning yet?

15. How To Make It Hurt Worse
A small decline in automobile sales won't hurt Ford a bit. Besides, they can fight a generalized boycott by putting pressure on the Unions.

However, if we target one particular model, then the dip in the model's sales figures will be difficult to mistake, and will offer no rationalizable anti-Union action.

We ought to find a relatively popular model of car and announce a boycott of that. Not an SUV, because they can say that the price of gasoline was responsible; but a popular, economical car that Yuppies and working-class stiffs alike buy.

"Boycott the Ford YupLust. Buy any other Ford except that one!"

We'll see a very quick change of heart from Ford.

When the change has been made and repentance is offered, then the sites that announced and supported the boycott should offer some FREE advertising for Ford. Nothin' major, just enough to reinforce good behavior and flex the muscle of the Lefty grassroots.

Ford, after all, isn't the enemy. It's the wicked little shytebird sitting on Ford's shoulder telling it to do bad things. Without a hate object, that shytebird flies away and dies hungry and alone.

Consider it. It could be an easy way to move a lot of public sentiment without jeopardizing Union jobs.

25. I would--and am--have always liked and mostly owned fords, now have
a subaru--but if I had a ford, it would be wearing a "for sale" sign today, as I told one of the people on the list from yesterday--jim cain, who was so thoughtful to give us his cell phone number.

I will now be boycotting ford until their policies change. I reminded them that GM just cut 30,000 jobs, and if ford continues in this stupidity, they are going to be laying off quite a few, as well.

Normally I wouldn't bother to tell them why, but if there's a boycott because of the anti-gay stuff, I'll tell 'em.

I've been frequently thinking lately that it's about time for all the corpocrats that have been financing the cultural war to get hit with some blowback. If they get hit from both sides, fine with me.

This story is getting picked up in the mainstream press. Ford thought it had a nice, quiet under the radar deal to cave in to the hatemongers. Well, surprise, surprise...it's out in the open.

I'd love to see moveon.org pick up this story.

35. I would.
It wouldn't have much impact; I haven't driven a ford since I left my old pinto that gave up the ghost climbing an incline behind on the side of the road in the early 80s.

If I had the money, which I don't, I'd buy a full-sized truck to haul my horse trailer and large loads of hay. My tacoma can do half a ton of hay, but can't manage the horses. If I ever scrape together the money for a big truck, I promise not to look at fords.

37. I'm not sure a "boycott" is going to have that great an impact....
... especially since many of us don't own or don't plan to own a Ford. And while I don't think much of Ford Motor Company, I gotta believe they did their homework in regard to the fallout from making this move. I definitely think there should be a response, but it should be one that is going to get their attention.

41. Instead of boycotting Ford
A better tactic might be boycotting the magazines in which Ford still advertizes and, of course, letting the publishers know why you're boycotting. The problem with boycotting an automobile company is that many people weren't going to buy a Ford anyway or even any car at all.

42. Not me, I love Ford cars.
I didn't boycott them (or Coca Cola) over apartheid, I'm not going to over this.

I live in the Detroit area. A large boycott could make a bad situation worse right now. I've seen what has happened to cities dependent on the auto industry over the past 30 years, and it's not pretty. When GM goes bankrupt or gets taken over by a foreign country, my state and region are fucked enough. We don't need the other american company to go down with it.

Do you really think boycotting Ford will hit the management in the pocketbooks? Or do you think a further loss of sales will contribute to so many line workers losing their jobs and leaving the middle class for poverty?

I love my Ford Focus. It gets great mileage, it is loaded with extras, and this week, I am loving my heated seats! Also keep in mind that Ford is the only american company planning to make more environmentally friendly automobiles.

Dear Ford,
You know, I was going to buy a new Ford this spring, but when I saw you bend to the will of the American Family Association, you lost my business. That is such a scummy thing to do. Henry Ford revealed he was a racist when he published, "The International Jew: The World's Foremost Problem". Henry Ford II did a fairly good job repairing the companies image, but I guess the new generation at Ford is carrying along in that old bigoted/racist tradition. Shame on you! You have no guts and are failing because you only listen to the religious political winds rather than what the people want: a cheap, fuel efficient car.

I currently own a Ford, and after learning about Ford's decision to pull advertising from gay publications to appease AFA, I decided to dump the damn thing after the first of the year. I also wrote a letter to Ford Motor Company's board of directors, and to my local Ford dealership, explaining why I will never buy a Ford for the rest of my driving days.

be accomplished by boycotting Ford other than hurting their employees
that probably are mostly Democrats? I have bought Fords since 1980 after buying two Chevys that were junk from day one. I bought a Toyota a couple weeks ago because I thought it was the best product in the mid size pickup market. It was also assembled in a Blue State (California) and has 70% American content. Some so called American cars are made off shore with 0% American content.
