My name is Bill Winter and I am a Colorado native and a 1982 graduate of Littleton High School, among many other things. For the last year I have been President of an organization called Be The Change USA. The name of the organization comes from Gandhi's famous quotation that you must be the change you wish to see in the world. Be The Change USA had a very successful year in educating, motivating and expanding a grassroots movement among progressives in Colorado. This will be important in achieving success in what will be the most historic election cycle in Colorado history. I will not, however, enter that cycle as President of BTC-USA.
I have been asked to take on, and I have accepted, the challenge of running for Congress against Tom Tancredo in Congressional District 6. I did not make this decision lightly and I am not in this to be a paper candidate or win moral victories. I have a total of ten years of service with the Marine Corps and the Navy, and in good Marine Corps tradition, I am in it to win it and I believe we can.
When I was 17, and again when I was 24, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I believe that I am still bound by that oath, and I believe that our Constitution is under attack now more than any other time in my life. I am running for Congress to defend the Constitution, to serve my Country, to serve my native state, and to serve the District where I grew up. And I am running for Congress to give our government back to the people, which is what our Founding Fathers intended in the first place!
But I cannot win this race alone. Alone I am nothing and can do nothing. But with the help of thousands of good Americans like you, we can win this. We can make sure that CD6 is once again represented in Congress, and is not just a platform for a personal war of hate and bigotry. I believe we are at a turning point in our history, and I intend to make CD6 part of that.
But make no mistake, this is not about me. I don’t want to be President, or Governor, or Senator or anything else. I just want to serve — the way I served as a 17 year old in the Marine Corps. I want to give CD6 back to the people. And here’s why.
I believe that the majority of people in CD6 care about their fellow man. I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want some kind of health care for ALL Americans. I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want better schools and better opportunities for their children and their families.
I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want the federal government to help us in the case of a disaster. I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want federal help to maintain our highways and help us find enough water for everyone. I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want some kind of comprehensive security plan to keep us safe from terrorists as well as accidents and natural disasters.
I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want people to make the most difficult choices in their lives themselves and for the government to stay out of it, whether it’s the gut wrenching decision to end a pregnancy, or the absolutely heartbreaking choices at the end of a life! And I believe that the majority of people in CD6 want some kind of rational plan to bring an end to the war in Iraq so that no more of our sons and daughters have to die for a flawed policy that does not make us safer!
It may turn out that I am wrong in believing these things, but I don’t think I am, and I will not compromise on these principles. At the end of the day I can always go back to practicing law and coaching kids, but my integrity is something that I can not get back if I give it away.
So I will stand by these things and I will go talk to Democrats, Republicans, Unaffiliateds, and anyone else who will listen, because I believe that we all have much more in common than we have in differences. I believe it is time that we all stopped saluting donkeys and elephants, and began to salute the American flag!
People are crying out for leadership and I will try to give it to them. They are crying out for integrity and I will try to give it to them. And they are crying out for someone who puts the greater good above the politics of self interest, and I will try to give them that too.
But we need to raise money to make all of this happen. We need to raise well over one million dollars and I am hoping you will help me do that. I am also hoping you will help me with your ideas and advice. History belongs to the bold and it is time for us to take back America and fulfill the promise this Nation holds for ALL people, and not just for wealthy and connected people.
So keep your eyes and ears open. Look for our website to launch on November 28th. Tune in to the Jay Marvin show on AM-760 on November 30th to hear me announce my candidacy. Be ready to get involved and make a difference. I look forward to meeting you and talking about how we can take back this important seat in Congress. I hope to convince you that I can achieve this goal, and I hope I can get you to believe the way I do, because I need your help in so many ways to get our Country back where it belongs!
