You NEED to see this video - REALLY powerful stuff.....
Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 11:26 PM by Laurab
It's a really powerful video I just discovered (a little graphic) at jacksonbrowne.com, right on the first page - it's called "Lives in the Balance", and I've been trying to post it, but don't know how to do it. Any help would be appreciated, or if someone can do it, please do.

Thanks!

edit - link in 2nd post - I'm link illiterate, and had to ask for help!

22. I just watched it again...my favorite parts:
Shrub looking out the airplane window at the (I think?) "napalm" girl from Vietnam ("you might ask what it takes to remember, when you know that you've seen it before").

Then: Colin Powell presenting the case to the UN holding his props - "where a government lies to a people and a country is drifting to war"

and finally: the "Meet with Cindy" poster with "I want to hear somebody asking them "why"? they can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are - but they're never the ones to fight or to die".

But there are so many more things they just NAILED. It IS brilliant I think.

The song was actually written during Iran-Contra, and there was a different video, which Jackson produced and paid for himself, since the record company wouldn't do it. Back then, I was just a fan, I really didn't have a clue what he was talking about. It took * for me to figure it out.

He just released a solo acoustic album on his own label, and chose that song for the first single - I hope the video gets played as well as the song.

44. The picture of the "napalm" girl is even more
powerful (if that were possible) given the recent disclosure of the military's use of white phosphorous on the people of Fallujah. Horrible, shameful, and inexcusable!

This video made me cry. I hope it gets some air time somewhere.

20. pic of Jackson Brown
Very powerful video. First class, all the way!

A few decades ago I was a concert promoter and brought in Jackson Brown as one of my acts. I had to see what he looked like after all these years and so I googled him:

He's hardly changed!

As the concert promoter, I stayed behind the stage throughout the concert and usually, therefore, missed the concert. With Jackson Brown, however, I lucked out because he was drinking a fifth of whiskey that night and turned his back to the audience most of the time. It was like getting a front row performance just for me, behind stage.

Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 01:11 AM by Buddyblazon
I've worked with him a couple of times. Only a little bit of interaction with him both times.

Although, I have to say, he was awfully "grabby" with a couple of the female PA's on one occasion.

End of story.

24. Not sure why you'd "have to say" that
and it pretty much goes against anything I've heard/read about him, also his girlfriend of over 10 years travels with him a lot. Also not sure what it has to do with the video or the song.

I've only met him once, but I've been a fan for over 30 years, and never, ever heard about him being "grabby" with females, just a later debunked story about his relationship with Daryl Hannah. Except, perhaps in his teenage years...

But, hey, if you "had to say it" you had to.....what did you think of the video?

21. no kidding, damn
Sitting here with a little plate of leftover turkey leg, and a glass of wine and a cig after a long day spent with my fams (who were pleasantly relatively undysfunctional today, for them) and browsing DU while Will&Grace thanksgiving on Lifetime was on commercial...

And y'know how sometimes people say "powerful" but, different strokes, you might think is, well, poignant enough but a little schmaltzy. (Sorry, had to watch several of my republi-uncle-in-law's "poignant" powerpoint presentations of family photos set to country music, after which he explained the "technical magic" of "photo enhancement" to us - ooh the simps are so honored our family now includes a nucular engineer who's figured out how to use the clone brush in photoshop, ay... sorry, wine tangent. :))

So anyway. Sitting here, I wasn't really thinking ahead to the possibility that watching this Jackson Browne video might make my right eye suddenly start trickling out while I was watching it. But it did. Laurab not mistaking schmaltz for powerful; it hits.

Preach on, Jackson Browne.

32. Thirtly year admirer of Jackson, too.....
He is a giver. Too few givers in our world of plenty.

He's got a way to pull out the raw emotion in a situation, an atmospheric echo of a feeling, and words, that like reality, cut like a knife.

34. Great vid....
...what's happened to Jackson Browne? Wasn't there something about him beating up his wife about 10 years or so ago?

I love(d) his music when he was popular but haven't heard much since - or maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Anyway, thanks for the vid! It's great! Passing it on.

37. He's still around
He's been making music since the 1970's, he never stopped, but never really released anything all that commerical except for "Running on Empty" and that was back in '76 I think.

As for the gossip - yeah there were stories that he beat Daryl Hannah (his longtime girlfriend), over 10 years ago - that story has been debunked, and both he and Daryl have denied it, (as has the police department who were called to the house)- it was apparently not a nice breakup. Basically it was just National Enquirer type gossip.

He's never stopped making music, it just hasn't been mainstream, and as he got more political, he probably got even less mainstream.

He was in the lineup for the "Vote for Change" shows, and also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a year or two ago by Bruce Springsteen, so he's been busy....

42. I Posted The Words To This Song Many Months Ago!!
Didn't get MUCH response back then.... but given the fact that the song was written in the late 80's it's so VERY VERY Powerful!!!

I play it ALL the time. I have 2 CD's and wore out 1 cassette tape! I also think I have EVERYTHING he's ever recorded starting way back with Doctor My Eyes!!! Lives In The Balance CD is Superb!!!!

Regardless of what anyone might say about Jackson Browne, I LOVE HIM!!! I've recorded him 3 different times from PBS productions. The last one was simply FANTASTIC!

He's a real Activist and I saw him in person too!! One of my ALL TIME favorite singers! Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, The Boss... Geeeezzzz, we need them out there NOW!!!

43. Hey, I posted the words, too
a while back...I have everything he's ever recorded, and then some - there are a LOT of bootlegs out there, and I collected some in my younger days. There's a version of Joan Baez & Jackson doing a song called "El Salvador" on a few of them - great song. Also have the DVD called "Going Home" where he does a version of this song with Crosby and Nash singing harmony, and somewhere lost in my old videos, a couple of PBS tapes.

I've seen him 7 times, maybe more, and met him once briefly, very unassuming, down-to-earth, and helped us get a picture because we were nervous....

A couple other songs on "Lives in the Balance" are quite appropriate for this misadministration, too. Whoever it was that did the visuals on this is amazing - everytime I watch it, something new hits me.

47. Looks Like You Have A Little More Than I...
but I try to keep a close watch on EVERYTHING Jackson!!!

I recently missed a Jackson Browne performance down here in Florida and just wanted to KICK myself!! But I did tape "The Boss's" D.C. Tour before the Election! Superb!! Four hours long!!

As a "forever" Boomer, I still have a subscription to The Rolling Stone Mag. and my grandson will soon be 17!! I DID marry young, like 18, but no problem! AND am one of those rarities that is still married to the same man!

I do however NEED to get a DVD. Been waiting about upgrading my TV because of the Analog thing, but having a Dish shouldn't make much difference! I taped several PBS presentations of Jackson, Tom Petty, Dylan, Moody Blues and very very early Dylan in London with Baez!! Moody Blue will be here in December, but the best seats have been snapped up! Sure miss those days of ACTIVISM!!

And I didn't see Baez with him regarding El Salvador! I HIGHLY recommend the "Lives In The Balance" CD because as you said it has some other VERY informative songs on it! And to think it was written in the 80's! I have so much of Baez, Dylan and all those Activists from long ago!

Still Crazy After All These Years!!!
