Louisiana to join OPEC?
Interesting comment on New Orleans radio this AM. Folks getting frustrated about the pace of relief on several fronts. A man called up the local radio station and suggested Louisiana secede from the Union, join OPEC and price gouge the hell out of the USA. Lots of oil comes from Louisana and a helluva lot of commerce relies on the Mississippi River, access to which is in Louisiana. Local frustration is not helped by comments from gop "statesmen" like hastert and stevens who wonder why anyone would want to rebuild in New Orleans? Praytell why the hell would anyone want to rebuild in their hometown? No such questions asked when Anchorage was rebuilt with federal aid over an earthquake faultline. The same for LA and San Fran. And thanks to those life loving republicans, Louisiana has to repay the aid their getting, unlike New York post 9/11 and unlike Iraq today. The secession idea ain't that bad afterall.

10. Not so long as your political organizations are soundly Confederate.
When you start electing real, non-Dixiecrat Democrats, then maybe
my feelings about how the SOuth has screwed the United States will
change.

But not until then.

Of course, your region could always stop being a massive sink of
my tax dollars; that'd help too.

11. "A massive sink for my tax dollars"...
That is the most Republicanish comment I have ever seen on DU. I am shocked and dismayed that someone with 1000+ posts on DU would have such divisive thoughts. Congratulations you have left me speechless...

The Northeast pays while the South takes; this is well-documented.

17. You want the truth?
The truth is that you're bigoted.

You're bigoted against a whole region soley because the Electoral College doesn't accurately reflect the percentage of non-Republican voters in the South.

Bigot.

19. Nahhh. I oppose the region...
Nahhh. I oppose the region because even when you send "Democrats"
to Washington, they're pathetic Democrats who might as well be
Republicans.

And I oppose the region because you really are a tax sink. (It's a
fact; look it up.)

And I oppose the region because through its anti-union policies, it
stole a huge part of the North's manufacturing base and then had the
unmitigated gaul to whine about it when even-cheaper labor stole those
jobs away from the South.

Shall I go on?

24. Hey you
Stop it, stop the bashing right now, please.

WE'RE people too, it's not fair to condemn an entire region with such blanket statements.

A LOT of good Democrats in the South...and YES we're Democrats TOO, no matter WHAT region we come from.

It's not the geography, it's what's in your heart and your mind.

So stop this bashing and let's all try to get along and play nice.

I don't like all the bashing, it's not fair

29. The Northeast is richer, that's why.
Of course the South takes more. There are more poor there than the Northeast. Your hatred for poor southerners (many of whom are minorities) is obvious and doesn't belong on a Democratic message board. Go take that message to the country club where it belongs.

16. How 'bout YOU come down here and spend a gazillion
dollars to overcome the influx of Reich-wing media most of our citizens are subjected to and THEN you can tell the 52 to 55 percent of the Republican voters what to do.

Until then, why don't you stop harping to the 48 to 45 percent of us who didn't vote for the Republicans.

As far as sinkhole to tax dollars, look no further than Iraq. Get your damned oil from someplace else. We are TIRED of fueling the nation and getting NOTHING in return. We have been cheated for over 50 years and our oil revenues STOLEN, while othewr states get fat cuts from theirs, and aren't ruining their coasts to do so.

Fuck off, right back at ya!

9. Ignore it!
I am a lifelong Southerner, born in South Alabama, currently living in Georgia. I am VERY proud of my region. Most of us have learned to ignore the prejudice of the Northern regions. We believe it comes from all those cold winters, when have nothing better to think about then us going to the beach in November!

Besides the less people that join us, the more gumbo, and shrimp for the rest of us!

12. Once again it must be pointed out to a stubborn Northerner that perhaps
it is time you realize that the South is a part of this country and any presidential candidate has to win those states to have a shot at the White House.

Or you could continue with your attitude and push the South further and further away from the Democratic party.

6. Yes the aid Louisiana has been given is in the form of loans
Can you get this shit?

It's all because Governor Blanco refused to hand over the ENTIRE state to the Federal government ie. Bush Inc. So Bush Inc. are punishing them by making the aid in loan form.

Pig fuckers.

Leave and join OPEC...afterall they're getting NO help, so they should try ANYTHING that might get them help and get them some more money. Secede and join OPEC if they can, I'd support Governor Blanco's decision.

25. Well yeah, but
If we could secede, and joined OPEC, we'd be our own country...and then we could also appeal to other countries for aid and to come and help us out.

We give the nation 25% of it's oil, the Port of New Orleans is crucial to the nation...we contribute a HUGE amount to the nation.

When we need help like NOW...we're told we're on our own. And it sucks and it's VERY spiteful.

All because Governor Blanco wouldn't bend over for the Bush bastard, that's what it is.

28. If ya wanna come to the quarter and party
then ya gotta pay that big ole tariff. If ya want gulf coast oil then ya gotta pay that big ole tariff. If ya wanna navigate the mighty Mississippi then ya gotta pay that big ole tariff. When New Hampshire residents are paying $8.00 a gallon for gas then we might get some love from way up north. Note to congress, treat us like Americans and we'll behave accordingly.

36. As a Texan I've heard this my whole life, but
never have seen it in print. I think it might be legend more than law.

If anyone has any documentation, please let me know.

Also, Louisiana joining OPEC would be unconstitutional as per Article 1, Section 10:1. "No state shall enter into any treaty, alliance or confederation..." In 1861 the southern states thought forming the Confederacy was Constitutional because they formally voted to leave the Union before entering into the CSA. Didn't help them any.

Also, in the Civil War, the south lost 1/4 of its adult white male population killed and another 1/4 wounded.

It's money in pockets, banks or bonds was made worthless.

It's livestock was killed, factories burnt, railroads torn up, and government taken away by the north.

And now northerners make fun of the south for being poor.
