‘End the war’ chorus that Bush can’t control
Sunday Times
All you have to do is look at John Murtha to see what he represents. He’s a white-haired, red-faced pro-war Democrat with a record of 37 years of service in the US Marines. His district is in western Pennsylvania, a place that was once coal and steel country, and which has seen its share of economic troubles.

He voted for the Iraq war. Three years ago he won the Semper Fidelis award of the Marine Corps Foundation. He’s no leftie and no anti-war Bush-hater. Almost every week he visits wounded soldiers at military hospitals in Washington. But last Thursday he went ballistic.

Here’s what he said: “The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of us. The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time for a change in direction.

“Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interest of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Gulf region.”

2. I'm glad Murtha stood by his principles, but he's way too conservative

for my taste to get a nationwide office for the Dems.

I'm seeing lots of "Murtha 4 Prez" posts and I'm frankly surprised. While he's our "darling" right now the slightest look below the surface will expose a very conservative Hawkish Democrat. I admit we need such types in the party, he's not "mainstream" for the Democrats IMO

4. UK's BBC News Night interviewed him. His scorn for a self-appointed
"Commander in Chief" who'd never been to war before was a joy to watch.

Like him. An excellent candidate for the role of Corporate Communications Director for the Dems.

5. that's fine, we also need to welcome conservative Democrats into
the party, maybe he can help with that?

I think lots of fiscally conservative/socially liberal folks are looking for a home with the current state of the Republican Party
