Please Forgive If Repost: The Scream Wasn't a Scream
Just saw this over at the Smirking Chimp. From Salon:

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/archive.html?blog=/politics/war_room/2004/01/29/deanscream/index.html

We've heard how Howard Dean rose and fell by the Internet, and now there's evidence that he was tripped up by yet another tool of the modern age -- the directional mike. After watching Dean's Iowa screech speech over and over again, as we all did that week, Diane Sawyer and her staff noticed the governor was using a microphone much like the ones they use in the Good Morning America studios. The mike is special because it blocks out background noise. That's why, despite the full room of 3,000 shrieking, orange-hatted supporters, the only thing you heard on the Dean scream replays, car alarms and dance mixes was his infamous yell. The Note said of Sawyer's story: "If you saw Diane Sawyer's incredible 'World News Tonight' show closer last night (and on GMA again this morning) -- about how the network tape showing Dean's 'I Have a Scream' speech was totally misleading because of Dean's use of a directional mike — you realize how easily a presidential campaign can be done in by the quirks of injustice."

In the ruinous wake of the speech and its echo on the Web, late-night TV, network television and talk radio, Deaniacs on the scene caucus night also tried to tell us that the scream was no big deal if you were actually there. But it's all over but the shouting that will live forever on tape -- and few will probably ever remember that a directional mike had anything to do with it.

So the Scream was just a scream among many, but the remix for a live broadcast overemphasized the yell. This is not to step in the way of Dean supporters embracing the controversy and nullifying it with pride at all. But Dean got handed a raw deal and has made the best of it. More proof that he is a top-notch candidate.

Gooooo, Dean! May the best candidate win!

1. .
Isn't it strange that the bastards of the media do everything to destroy him and then, when he isn't on the top anymore, they care to rush to his defense??

2. expect Brokaw to preface the debate with a full blown media apology
for smearing the Dean campaign and reaching into his "bag o tricks" and give him 330 delegates for being such a good "sport"...

The best revenge is success....go Dr. Dean.

3. I'm less than impressed
it's true .. ABC did some (gasp) objective coverage .. this is a dupe thread btw...

But now that they have the "Dean is Broke" story they don't need this one any more. On to the next maybe true maybe not journalistic challenge to brainwash boob tube addicts.

4. I saw it, it was a scream...
This whole thing is comical. After making way too much of it, they now want to create "new news" and re-spin it.

This was not some newfangled microphone sold to the Dean campaign by JFKerry and Sons audio-visual... this was just like any other situation that Dean has been in a hundred times.

It was exactly what it looked like on TV. Perhaps it sounded different to the crowd (although not likely), but Dean did just what we saw him do.

If you want to say "so what", I can respect that, but I can't respect this new spin on it from a talking head; it's hores-shit.

6. So IOW, Dean DID scream
but because it was a directional mike, and because it was "a scream among many", it wasn't a scream?
