I just saw the Wal-Mart Movie
See it. Let me repeat that. See It.

Excellent look at the way a Giant Corporation is raping America, and the rest of the world. The best part is, it doesn't only complain about Wal-Mart, it offers a documentary of what several communities are doing to fight it and how they are winning.

I was suprised to see such a large turnout tonight, but our town is fighting a wal-mart currently (http://www.friendsfairgrowth.org) so it's a hot topic.

Once again. See it.

1. I saw it tonight too. And this guy was there =====>
:D The guy who's face is the Big Box Mart guy from Jib Jab. He was introduced and they showed the Jib Jab animation before the movie.

This was at a L.I. synagogue.

3. scary good
the most sickening part to me was the woman who was abducted from the parking lot and killed while the parking lot was covered by surveillance cameras that were only used for union busting

9. that was powerful
but to me the most telling of wal-mart's greed was when they showed donations to the wal-mart employee to employee fund. The employees donated over 5 million in one year from their own paychecks!!!! And then the Walden family, the richest on earth, gave $6,000.

:grr:

12. exactly!!!
If I ever ever wanted to be religous, it was in the hope that these maniacal, awful human beings get what is coming to them. An image of the Wal-Mart CEO, toiling away 16 hours a day in a chinese sweatshop for all of eternity is quite appealing.

17. The Walton family is the biggest WELFARE QUEENS we have
in the United States. They made their money to buy BIG FANCY CARS to drive around in by pushing the working person on FOOD STAMPS.

4. I'm in the middle of watching it now with the girl I was just going to
start a thread about this movie!

We just took a little intermission to get some goodies and stuff but you are so right-I haven't even watched the second half yet and it is mind blowing.

Forget about what you thought you knew abou Wal-Mart. Greenwald delivers again!!

5. Will Wal_Mart sell the DVD? I bet they would for the money...
I bought my copy of F911 at Walmart...a robot cashier took care of the transaction.

I think everyone should see it. There were over 30 at the showing, a lot more than I expected.

8. it seems like the anti-wal-mart movement is growing
I think they went so far with their greed that now people are starting to take notice. They won't budge an inch, and so they have opened themselves up for even more criticism.

11. Also, read Greg LeRoy's book: The Great America Jobs Scam
The Great American Jobs Scam : Corporate Tax Dodging And The Myth Of Job Creation

From Publishers Weekly

Founder and director of the nonprofit center Good Jobs First, LeRoy offers a parade of damning case studies showing why communities should not woo corporations with subsidies. Corporate tactics, he finds, include quickly shuttered subsidized facilities, union busting and jobs that pay below the poverty line. Rewritten tax codes, which focus on sales taxes but ignore payroll and property taxes, as well as other tax abatements, undermine schools; most stadiums and convention centers further bleed public monies. Moreover, subsidies generally support suburban sprawl rather than accessibility to public transit used by the poor. Some corporate location consultants work both for companies and governments—"a sad reflection" of a disorganized public sector. On the corporate minus side, tax incentives to relocate, he shows, are dwarfed by labor, transport and utility costs. The upshot? Corporations are paying 28% less in state and local taxes than 20 years ago. LeRoy's suggested reforms include greater disclosure about subsidy deals; money-back guarantees if companies don't fulfill their pledges; requiring subsidized jobs to meet local average wages; closing corporate loopholes; and making sure every deal is approved by elected officials rather than appointed ones. 14. I saw it also
There seemed to be about 500 people there - a lot of young people.

It seemed fairly similar to the Frontline/PBS show. That is available online:

16. I saw it a couple nights ago in L.A. and for some reason Rep.Sherrod Brown
(D-OH) was there. I wanted to ask him about why he told Paul Hackett he wasn't going to run against DeWine in 06 and then turned around and declared his candidacy, but chickened out. He was pretty good, though. Knew a lot about how Wal-Mart exploits Central America, had travelled there, fought Wal-Mart and won in his district, worked with Kucinich. Ohio could do a lot worse.

Oh, and the movie was good, too - though maybe a little too dramatic with the writing on the screen and everything. I guess I like it when things speak for themselves. But it is obviously long over-due.

18. That comes from having too much information and not enough time.
You want to push in as much as you can.
