Woodward/Libby Spin - Nailed by Olberman
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 09:13 PM by TruthStream_dot_org
We have to nail this spin head on. Kieth Olberman did - letting his viewers know that Fitzgerald never said Libby was definitively THE first official to leak Plame's name. In fact, he said he was the first KNOWN official. There is a HUGE difference. Keith Olberman spent two segments pointing this out tonight.

Segment 1

Segment 2

1. Why does it matter who was FIRST?
I don't understand this at all.

5. K.O. or K.O.'s guest made a point of saying: it does not matter if Fitz
...said that because a comment in a press conference has no legal bearing.

Obviously, the warmongers are just looking for some spin they could hang on.

6. well the spin masters...
are trying to say that if Woodward heeard it first from someone else, then that would somehow entirely unravel the case against Libby. This is obviously utter nonsense as it has nothing to do with the counts of perjury or obstruction of justice. However, they are trying to say that this somehow screws up Fitzgeralds 'timeline', which again is just BS as there was obviously a reason he kept the investigation open (knowing there was more to the story and witnesses yet to come forward) and there was a reason he said Libby was the first KNOWN leaker.

2. he is soooo good!!
and even when no one else was reporting on this story, Olbermann still talks about it......whether or not there is breaking news to report (like today).

8. actually
I saw this sotry reported over and over all day, but every single reporter said that this screwed up fitzgerald and that fitzgerald said that Libby was the first leaker, which he didnt say. In fact, in one of these segments, he points out that on ABC News (I believe), they reported just that: that fitzgerald said Libby was THE first and this throws everything off and 'what else could he have missed?'...

...setting the bar reallllll low on Fitz. Good.

7. It matters because Libby lawyers
are trying to trash the case. Fitz said the first known person to call a reporter. Bob woodward is trash. He lies and hates liberals. That guy Cohen from the WP is a real jerk. He was on Tweedy's program. Sided with Woodward and allowed the lie to go forward. I hope Woodward goes to jail.

10. me too
especially given how badly he talked about fitzgerald and the case in general before all of this. He is obviously biased and has obviously been thrown in by the administration as a wildcard.

11. Even the AP is getting it wrong
The headline on Yahoo! is:
Woodward Claim on CIA Leak Disputes Charge
and the text starts off:
Bob Woodward's version of when and where he learned the identity of a CIA operative contradicts a special prosecutor's contention that Vice President Dick Cheney's top aide was the first to make the disclosure to reporters.

http://tinyurl.com/dlpzc

WHEN are reporters going to start checking up on the statements of people who have every reason to lie and spin? Until they do, they're just stenographers who give good stenographers a bad name.

Thank God for Keith.

12. EMAIL AP!!
info@ ap.org

My letter:

Regarding your AP Article posted on Yahoo news, as well as other places I’m sure, located at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051117/ap_on_go_ot/cia_leak_woodward;_ylt=Arm5g_LIKRbXS1H6HBxkw32s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ-- and titled, “Woodward Claim on CIA Leak Disputes Charge” there seems to be a problem. Mr. Fitzgerald did not say that Mr. Libby was definitively THE first official to leak the identity of Mrs Plame. Instead, he said that Mr. Libby was the first KNOWN official to leak the name. There is a huge difference. I believe that this should be pointed out in a follow-up article that shows this in no way ‘disputes’ Mr. Fitzgerald’s charge that Mr. Libby lied to a Grand Jury and obstructed justice in doing so.

Sincerely,

Scott H

15. Yes, thank God for Keith
and because he is so careful himself to read carefully and get things right, I think all of DU should make a pledge: let's get HIS name right.

Olbermann. An L and two N's.

Thanks. :-)

Scooter was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice, not who told first. It's just republican spin.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

18. woodward first
i know it doesn't matter in the long run, but i think what kept bothering me was the fact that i couldn't see where he was truly 'first' and then started thinking that since he got outed on this, his ego went into overdrive, and of course, he then had to be first....

21. Could be

...I don't think that Woodward will come out of this smelling like a rose. Fitzgerald is relentless about going after the guilty, just ask George Ryan.

We'll have to just sit back and watch it all unfold.

Cheers!

17. I watch very little teevee, but saw that show tonight.....
I loved the way that Olbermann was so matter of fact in introducing the actual words against the "spin"...that the reporter was really trying very hard to put on it.

That was very well done. Thank you Keith!

19. I love the way Keith pounds a point
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 10:23 PM by Awsi Dooger
Tonight he emphasized the "first known" many times over more than one segment. Last week he played the "that's accurate" comment from little Scotty over and over so there was no question about it. We may not have many friends in the national media but Keith counts for several all by himself.
