NYC PBA Tops List of Early Spitzer Supporters
New York, NY (November 16, 2005) – The New York City Patrolmen's Benevolent Association (PBA) today announced that it will support Eliot Spitzer for Governor in 2006. With over 50,000 members, the PBA is the largest municipal police union in the country.
In a news conference at the organization's headquarters, PBA President Patrick J. Lynch was joined by other Union leadership and Spitzer. "Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has earned our support. He has combated fraud and corruption at every level. He has fought for the working men and women of this state and has restored fairness where there was once injustice," Lynch said. "We at the PBA look forward to joining him as he continues, as Governor, to be our partner in protecting the best interest of all New Yorkers."
"I am honored to stand with Pat Lynch and the PBA and am proud to accept this very important endorsement. As a former Assistant DA, I know firsthand how hard police officers work and how important it is that they receive a fair shake," said Spitzer. "The PBA's early support is an essential component of my campaign to restore integrity, openness and fairness to state government."
The PBA's support comes as Spitzer has accumulated a number of high-profile endorsements from organized labor and the backing of many unions, including the PBA, that supported Governor Pataki's reelection bid in 2002.
To date, Spitzer has received the support of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the New York State Professional Firefighters, UNITE-HERE, the Communications Workers of America, RWDSU/UFCW, the United Auto Workers, the International Association of Machinists, the International Union of Operating Engineers, the New York State Court Officers, Sheetmetal Workers International, the United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters, New York State Laborers PAC, SEIU Local 200, the Nassau/Suffolk Building Trades Council, and IATSE.
Commenting on the electoral significance of this tremendous early union support, Spitzer 2006 campaign manager Ryan Toohey said, "As Attorney General, Eliot has worked hard to represent the interests of working men and women and these endorsements show that they are confident that he will do the same as Governor. Organized labor is obviously an essential part of our campaign. We are particularly pleased to have earned the support of unions that backed Pataki in 2002."
