5. I think they have already picked one - "Together, We Can Do Better".
I think Dean used it today and I've heard Reid use it recently also.

8. Right, and I've seen that properly criticized elsewhere
Specifically in a long thread on MyDD.com a couple of weeks ago.

I agreed with the criticisms. The word "can" is too weak. What's wrong with "will"?

Also, "better" is too vague and indecisive. What are we talking about, 5% better? That would still be crap. You need something positive like "succeed" or "prosper" or whatever.

I think something based on the right track/wrong track numbers would be preferable, using the specific terms. Those right track/wrong track numbers have been consistently awful for more than a year and it would be something the average voter could relate to and remember.

I wouldn't pay an advertising agency 5 cents for "Together, We Can Do Better." In fact, I would fire them on the spot. It reminds me of when I was a kid in Florida. The Ft. Lauderdale Strikers soccer team hired an agency to come up with a slogan. And they used it, "Soccer is the Name of the Game." Meanwhile, a few hundred miles upstate the Tampa Bay Rowdies simultaneously hired a different agency: "Soccer is a Kick in the Grass."

So let's not settle for the first lame slogan.

9. Don't know about the rest of you ...
... but I've heard that one, too -- and I don't like it. After the devastation this Admin has caused over the last five years, I want to hear something more than 'doing better'. On its face, it sounds like the Dems are saying, "We can't do GREAT, but we can do BETTER ..."

If you're going to go with "We can do Better," why not go all-out with the concept and say, "Hey, America! We're the Democratic Party and we couldn't POSSIBLY DO ANY WORSE!"

Just MHO.

11. We help Americans, they help corporations
This should be obvious, but the new tact that the Reich is taking is, "Government should not be in the business of helping people along".

13. Put the American People First
I posted my suggestion a few days ago:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=2240239

It is simple, patriotic, harkens back to the 1992 campaign and is consistent with core Democratic values.

Put the American People First

The Democratic Party supports:

1. Economic and Domestic Policies that Put the American People First

issues that fall under this point might include:

• Health Care Reform
• Incentives for entrepreneurship and job growth
• Policies that discourage outsourcing
• Protecting the future by paying down the national debt
• Policies that side with working families and small business owners over big corporate interests
• Environmental policies that work to protect people'e health and future instead of big corporations

2. Governing Policies that Put the American People First

issues that fall under this point might include:

• Honest and responsible government
• Appointments made on merit, not cronyism
• A commitment to protect individual privacy rights
• A commitment to fair and open elections

3. National Security Policies that Put the American People First

issues that fall under this point might include:

• Strengthen and protect national intelligence
• Deal with terrorism by focusing on terrorists and repairing relationships with allies
• Bring the National Guard home to deal with national emergencies
• Reduce the number of troops in Iraq
• No elective wars

There may be better ways to organize issues, and, of course, not all of the issues may get universal agreement. But my point is that we need one proactive, overarching idea (I hate to compare it to “contract with America” but I’m going to anyway), that can be broken down into smaller, more specific pieces.
