I heard it mentioned in passing on the radio this morning (Sunday Salon - KPFA) Larry Bensky was interviewing a number of guests like Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Mapes (former producer of CBS News dept who exposed Abu Ghraib and then fired for doing the story on Bush's AWOL status in the National Air Guard) and talking about journalism during the McCarthy period and how Edward R Murrow and CBS handled the issues of the day, naturally drawing the obvious comparisons to today.
it's pretty insane at this juncture imo, for any city newspaper to fire a columnist for their anti-war views. I mean at this juncture i think it's damn insane, ya know?
In any event I also discovered that Scheer will be posting his columns at the Huffington Post starting Wednesday, but let me urge people to call the LA Times to express your disgust with their actions on firing a columnist whose voice of dissent on this administrations policies on Iraq and other important matters germane to the politics nationally and locally (who knows, maybe the Terminater had something to do with it too?) and was the FEW writers who voiced his opposition very early during the drumbeat leading up to the war, and gave voice to millions of people in America and indeed the World who opposed this pre-emptive strike policy of the Neo Cons.
Here's the number: 213-237-5000
When you call, just hit "0" for Operator, and then again (for Operator) and then tell the operator why you're calling and s/he will put you through to the voice mail intended dealing with Editorials.
Here's the link to Scheer's post on the subject:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-scheer/on-leaving-the-la-tim_b_10509.htmlOn Friday I was fired as a columnist by the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, where I have worked for thirty years. The publisher, Jeff Johnson, who has offered not a word of explanation to me, has privately told people that he hated every word that I wrote. I assume that mostly refers to my exposing the lies used by President Bush to justify the invasion of Iraq.
Fortunately sixty percent of Americans now get the point, but only after tens of thousand of Americans and Iraqis have been killed and maimed as the carnage spirals out of control. My only regret is that my pen was not sharper and my words tougher.
Starting Wednesday morning, my column will be appearing here on the Huffington Post.

I highly recommend to take the time to read the comments. Apparently Scheer is being replaced by someone considered as a right wing bigot, at least by the poster's remarks. If true, that will really put the paper in the tank permanently. Maybe that will be a good thing. Oh yea, lots of people are cancelling their subscriptions and I think that's an important message to hammer home, especially to the owner of the LA Times who apparently made the decision to fire Scheer... Just my opinion...
