Santorum turns on Bush!
Funny how being down nearly 20 points as an incumbent will change someone's outlook.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051112/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_campaign_nostalgia

With his approval ratings plunging, even some Republican leaders are showing signs of abandoning Bush's listing ship.

"Mistakes were made," Republican Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) of Pennsylvania said Friday of the war effort.

When the president visited Pennsylvania to defend his Iraq policies on Friday, Santorum kept his distance, literally and rhetorically. He was 120 miles away, telling reporters the war in Iraq has been "less than optimal" and that "maybe some blame could be laid" at the White House.

...

Republicans like Santorum who are in tough re-election battles are starting to treat Bush like a toxic substance.

In a speech to veterans at the Union League in Philadelphia, Santorum criticized how the war has been presented to Americans, by the White House as well as by the media.

He said Bush made a mistake by calling it a "war on terror," which Santorum equated with calling World War II a "war on Blitzkrieg."

3. That's easy; it's more important to win re-election than to be loyal.
Doesn't that also explain why he has stuck by Bush when that goes against the people he is supposed to represent? It's all about what's best for Santorum.

13. never underestimate the effect political cowardice has on elected officials
It's the voice that says, as in blazing saddles "we have to protect our phony baloney jobs" and while it is not pleasant to watch it sometimes has benefits. Part of the reluctance of congress to vote on the ape's plan to gut social security came from fear of getting voted out of office by an enraged population. Think of how much worse it would be if the GOP congressmen felt strongly enough about this to lose an election.

Oh, and I'm not sure if people are aware of this, but it's my understanding that he was pro-choice UNTIL he ran for the Senate. He has no inner compass -- it's all about what will get him elected, which is what is happening right now. Once he's elected, he'll go right back to be the obnoxious, belligerent bastard that he's always been.

F*ck you, Rick Santorum! (Sorry, but he's one of my Senators, and I'm absolutely appalled by that fact.)
