That Virginia attorney general race is getting tighter and tighter
Even before the official recount begins. I just checked and Deeds now trails by only 410 votes. This morning it was 620, after dropping below 1000 yesterday.

I've read accounts in Virginia online papers and it seems the changes are due to mistakes like flubbed basic addition in some precincts and in one case 200 votes were initially not included at all. These changes have come after all precincts were reporting. I've only seen one update turn slightly in McDonnell's favor, otherwise we gain.

Just no way to tell how far along they are in the process or what the likelihood of reversal is once recounting begins. I've read each side has up to a dozen representatives in the room while vote totals are being reviewed, with tense situations like people leaning over the shoulder of election officials and being chastised to move back.

4. Even tighter
Down to 347 now. That's a net gain of 99 votes for Deeds today. Sunday was the first day McDonnell gained, from 410 to 446.

8. The recount has not started
Here is today's summation paragraph from dcpoliticalreport.com:

"Two Transition Offices: With all the local canvasses completed in the Virginia Attorney General contest, Robert F. "Bob" McDonnell (R-VA) is leading R. Creigh Deeds by 446 votes out of 1,942,933 votes cast. Governor Mark R. Warner (D-VA) decided to make transition office space available to both candidates. A mandatory recount cannot begin until the vote is certified on November 28, 2005."

And this is a link to a story on the attorney general race:

http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD%2FMGArticle%2FRTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1128768154212&path=%21news%21politics&s=1045855935264

That link gives the 446 margin and also says local canvassing has been completed. An election official is quoted that there could be changes in the vote totals prior to the recount, but they wouldn't be significant. Yet today Deeds gained 99 votes. That's a damn significant percentage when you're talking about 400-odd votes.

Really numbing when you realize a presidency and therefore course of the world was decided by roughly these numbers.
