What Do You Hope To Hear The Candidates Say Tonight?

I'd like to hear someone say that the American people don't want this election to be about whether John Kerry uses Botox, whether Howard Dean screamed or whether Wes Clark wears fashionable sweaters.

Do not let the RW or media define the issues. We define the issues.

And chief among the issues are domestic issues -- the economy, healthcare and jobs but also foreign policy issues -- the really frightening escalation in deaths in not only Iraq but also Afghanistan, the fact that David Kay says there are no WMDs (loved his appearance --- he says -- turns out, that we were wrong), that Paul O'Neill says they always wanted to go into Iraq and the how the heck do we get out of Iraq?

What do you want to hear from the candidates??

2. "I believe the American people can put two and two together."
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 02:17 PM by NRK
"Remember last summer when it was disclosed that Cheney had leaned on the intelligence services to tell him what he wanted to hear? Now we find out that there were no WMDs all along, and the National Intelligence Estimate originally said just that. Now, David Kay wants us to believe that it's the White House who was duped? I KNOW the American people are smarter than that."

3. Exactly the same point John Edwards brought up in the last
debate. He played that one really great. I would like to see more of that.

5. Kerry: "I've Changed My Mind About Mandated Comm. Service .."
"As a requirement for teens to graduate high school. I now understand that the government cannot foist values on a young person, and certainly not with the effectiveness that a child's own family can."

6. Refuse to answer questions designed
to get them to slam other candidates or handicap the horserace and say, "I'd rather talk about (issue)."

13. That would be cool
If every candidate made a pledge (and stuck to it) to answer every process, personality, or non-issue question with, "We have all agreed only to answer questions about policies and positions. Unless you have another question, I'll pass."

7. "Fight to choose the best of us, and then work like hell in the GE"
Plus making fun of the media's constant horserace and sensationalist "who's wearing what" nonsense would also be fine with me. :D

8. something on the role of Media in our democratic system
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 02:27 PM by cosmicdot
the historical significance of the 4th estate and the consequences of being embedded in one political party and/or with special, i.e. corporate, interests ... continue to shed light on corporate media's complicity, etc.; its failure to be impartial ... its censorship ... its concentration on editorializing news instead of reporting news ... its narrow coverage of world events ... IOW 'take back the media' talking points ... don't be afraid to put the millionaire journalists in their place ...

a call for independent media to moderate one of these so-called debates

perhaps more effort in establishing a clear distinction between those who favor the corporate line, and those who don't, and the ramifications of the former ... and, the polluting of our system by corporate money and influence ... people have major angst in regards to how corporate america abuses them in their jobs and benefits ...

call for the release of Cheney's hidey hole energy task force papers, and release of Ray-gun/Bush I papers; and, start calling them them on the lies and corruption

btw...
who is attacking our candidates tonight ... I mean asking the questions ...

9. Good Question...I hope Clark
Smacks down any debate moderator who asks him stupid questions.
I hope he says, look I don't know why you're here, but I'm here to make sure the American people hear my message about womens issues, taxes, national security, the economy, my plans to prosecute the persons responsible for leaking CIA Agent's name, Catch OBL, get us out of Iraq, regain our national respect, and how I plan to be a better president for them than Chimpy Face.

To be fair, you and I can go out for a beer later and you can ask me all of the gossip questions you want. Right now though I need to use this valuable time to talk directly to the American people. I need to take my message to the main streets, diners, and family rooms of America.

That is what I want Clark to say!

10. I would like to hear a clear, articulate message for the middle class.
It used to be the Democratic base was the factory guys, the pick up driving guys, the waitresses, and the grocery store workers....etc. The people who didn't necessarily want to go to college. The people who want a modest but comfortable lifestyle married to a high school sweetheart, and kids who live nearby raising the grandkids. I would like to see the Democratic Party actively represent this segment of America. We are loosing the middle class viability and vitality that provides stability and growth for the American people.

I hope that doesn't sound too maudlin. And I know that some of the candidates try that, but I don't think the working class paycheck to paycheck folks can hear it above the culture war din put out by the GOP and the religious right machines.

15. "If I'm elected, it won't be fraudulent." (more)
"Distinguished guests and viewers and fellow candidates, as President, I will try to be a better neighbor in the world community. The rule of law will be respected in my administration, which will be devoted to policies that seek to help our citizens and the people of the world, not those which spread more misery.

A good beginning would include fully restoring the Bill of Rights. My administration will have none of the abominations euphemistically called Free Speech Zones. No one would need fear arrest and indefinite detention without charge or benefit of counsel. Citizens would not be targeted for surveillance merely on the basis of political beliefs. Libraries and librarians would no longer be unwilling conscripts snooping on their fellow citizens, because my administration would end that unAmerican nonsense on the first day."

There's a beginning for you, although I would not like the assassination attempt before the end of the speech.
