1. Maybe ..maybe not but either way
Kerry needs to make sure he doesn't make statements that alienate people by geography..let it be a learning experience for him.

2. What kind of foolish logic is that???

If Kerry wins SC on Tuesday will people stop saying "Kerry hates the south"?

He said that THE DEMOCRATS DON'T NEED THE SOUTH!

He insulted the south when he said that.

Whether he wins the south or not is irrelevant!

He still said what he said, and because 75% of the people who may vote for him don't have a clue that he said what he said about the south, does not change the fact that he said it, so the answer to your question is a very simple...

..NO!

A win will not erase what he said, duh.

Oh, and by the way, when has anyone said that Kerry "HATES" the south?

Last I checked, the discussion was that he said Democrats don't need it, and although that is statistically true, it's very unlikely that a candidate with that approach would win a general election by limiting his opportunities.

3. In that case

If Kerry wins in SC, will people stop saying that Kerry is "forgetting the South"

It's awfully hard to win in the South (or anywhere else) if you forget about it. Winning in the south would be a strong indication that Kerry has not forgot the South

It's the same DISCUSSION!

It doesn't change what he says!

The only reason that Kerry is even trying to win SC is because he wants to try to wipe out John Edwards while he can.

The longer Edwards hangs around, the less likely it is that Kerry will get the nomination...PERIOD!

John Kerry knows this, and so he is competing in SC because he wants to try and get rid of Edwards.

It is a strategic decision not a moral one.

9. Kerry Sure Sounded Like It. Plus, Hollings Slur Against Jesse Jackson
heck, if Clark can get grilled for Moore's comments... Kerry should answer for Hollings.

Kerry screwed up and I hope Clark uses it.

15. Very weak
I'm sorry but "Kerry never said that but that's whay I think he meant even though I can't explain why I think that" is not very persuasive.

6. You seem to be forgetting the basic....
.... Kerry may win the battle, but he's lost the war.

You can expect that his Democratic rivals won't pounce upon him for his dissing the South; but don't think for a minute that Rove will let it pass.

Kerry's "gaffe" has likely sealed his GE fate in the southern states; and he'll be fortunate if it doesn't affect a number of the border states, as well.

(No, it may not be as bad as all that; unless he keeps it up.)

11. He was talking about the Gore campaign, and said that if...
they had one NH or one other small state they would have had it. He was not talking about his own effort. He plays well among veterans and has several southerners who are prominant in his campaign - Max Cleland and Fritz Hoollings, not to mention campaign co-chair Harold Ford Jr. from TN.

7. There were alot of deep south folks up here in NH
this week supporting Kerry. There is a difference between saying Kerry does not need the south to win and Kerry hates the south. Kerry doesn't hate the south and smart southerners know that. They also know that Bush has a lock on many southern states. They are being realistic which is the only way to win the general election. Many of these southerners are campaigning with him throughout the country in other non-southern states.

12. With Any Luck Kerry's Opponents Will Use Kerry's Stupid Gaffe
to great effect.

By the way, I remember a well known political writer on this forum who is a big Kerry fan saying essentially that both he and his father, who works for the Democratic Establishment down south, though Democrats can forget the electoral votes in thesouth.

In fact, said writer started a thread about it. Completely ignoring a chance of us getting Arkansas (Clark's home state).

13. Kerry's remarks about the south were about GE
not Dem primaries...the people he alienated by those comments probably include many dems..but more important..the swing voters any dem candidate needs to carry any southern state

That makes me laugh. After the scream Dean promptly crumbled in SC and OK and the other Feb. 3rd states.

18. Thanks
for playing up that a candidate shouldn't get excited at a pep rally in his honor.

The GOP enjoys watching Democrats shred each other.

"Dean's too excited. Kerry's too passive."

Does anyone get the candidate they really want?

21. You take that out of context...
Kerry was talking about Gore in 2000 and said he could have won with NH going for him. He's right. it really had nothing to do with weakness in teh south. However, had Gore managed to win his own state that might have helped. Thank god he's advising the Dean campaign.

22. Winning the primary doesn't mean Kerry can carry the state against Bush
I'd be very surprised if Kerry visits South Carolina again once the primary is over. He'd be lucky to get 40% against Bush in that state. And I suspect Hollings and Clyburn know that. But hey, everbody likes to be with a winner, even if it's just a primary.
