Dean camp condemns bin Laden ad
Commercial attacks candidate's national security credentials
Wednesday, December 17, 2003 Posted: 9:28 PM EST (0228 GMT)

(CNN) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean's campaign called on rivals Wednesday to disavow a television ad that uses an image of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to attack the former Vermont governor's national security credentials.

A group calling itself "Americans for Jobs, Healthcare and Progressive Values" aired the ad in the early Democratic battlegrounds of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

The group was founded in November as a nonprofit committee known as a "527" -- named for the section of the tax code that limits its requirement to disclose the source of its funding.

Its leadership includes two people with ties to Dean's Democratic rivals -- David Jones, a former aide to Rep. Dick Gephardt, and Robert Gibbs, a former spokesman for Sen. John Kerry's campaign.

The assasination of Dean started when "these thugs" became terrified that the PEOPLE wanted a decent govenor, with a great record who could stand up on issues.

Problem was....he's not from DC.

Who is responsible for "smearing our candidate"?

:eyes:

Robert Gibbs, a former spokesman for Sen. John Kerry's campaign

DNA tests will prove conclusively that Robert Gibbs IS NOT KERRY.

Gibbs has the right to his own opinion about Dean, even if it is inflammatory crap. But trying to link this ad to Kerry is also inflammatory crap.

4. they even admit it ..afterwards....such "thugs"

Jones issued a statement Wednesday saying the ad was meant to raise the issue of Dean's "national security and foreign policy experience."

"That is the ad's intention and that is what it does," he said.

7. forget washington insiders .....here's more ... this was planned
WASHINGTON – Several labor unions that endorsed Rep. Dick Gephardt donated $50,000 apiece to a group broadcasting commercials that question Democrat presidential rival Howard Dean's credentials, including one spot that features Osama bin Laden and two others that align the former Vermont governor with President Bush.
One of the unions, International Association of Machinists, called Tuesday for the group, which calls itself Americans for Jobs, Healthcare and Progressive Values, to pull the ad and release the names of its financial backers. Other labor unions that gave money to the group include Laborers International Union of North America and Ironworkers Union, both of which have endorsed Gephardt for president.

"The ads are despicable, and we ought to ask for the refund," said Rick Sloan, a spokesman for International Association of Machinists. "They've done more to damage Dick Gephardt than anything any of his opponents could have done or dreamed of doing."

"Don't give me this crap that he lost Iowa"

OK, I concede. Dean won Iowa. Kerry and Gephardt are evil. Politics is a game played in a snow-white arena free of corruption and power brokers.

Oh, and Dean will win the general election in 2004.

There - can I be your friend now?

How attacks on Dean may impact race

By Linda Feldmann | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
WASHINGTON - Howard Dean may fast become the poster boy for the saying, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

When an independent Democratic group ran a TV ad last week featuring Osama bin Laden's face and an anti-Dean message, the Democratic presidential front-runner appealed to his supporters. The result: $552,000 in Internet donations over three days.

The point of the ad - which aired in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, and has now been pulled - was to warn that Dr. Dean has no foreign-policy or military experience and wouldn't be able to compete with President Bush next November. Some Dean rivals agreed that the tone was over the top, but also agreed with its message.

Thus was capped a week framed by Bush foreign-policy successes - the capture of Saddam Hussein and a vow by Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi to abandon unconventional weapons - and punctuated by a Democratic pile-on against the man who may end up being the party's nominee.

For some Democrats, the sound of party members speaking ill of another Democrat led to hand-wringing that the party was doing the work of Bush's reelection team. All Bush's advisers would need to do, they said, was sit back and reap the rewards of colorful anti-Dean sound bites coming out of rival campaigns.

20. I don't need any more links, thanks - I was on DU during that shitstorm
As I said, the Osama ads were inflammatory crap. But assuming that Kerry is behind the ads is also inflammatory crap. (Gephardt's involvement was a little more fuzzy)

And I recall that Dean made plenty of money from his supporters after the ads hit the press. Meanwhile, Gep is out of the race. So who's the winner and who's the loser in this scenario?

Hardly anyone was sad to see them go.
From what i've heard, lahane and Gibbs wanted to go negative early. Kerry said no.
