Dr. Walid Al-Obeidi, the director of Haditha General Hospital and Dr. Jamil Abdul Jabbar, the only surgeon in the Haditha area were arrested for a week, very badly beaten and threatened to face the same treatment in the future by the American troops.

Dr.Walid said “they arrested me in my house in front of my family, covered my eyes, and tied my hands to the back on Oct 5 2005 morning, during the last attack on Haditha (360 kilometers west of Baghdad). They occupied the hospital for 8 days and made it their office. The first day they beat me on my eyes, nose, back, hands, legs... My face was covered with blood .When they removed the tie I could not see. They investigated me until the afternoon. I realized later that I was arrested in the hospital store. Then they tied my hands to the front, and left me for two days. I was moved then to the pharmacy department. They accused me of treating terrorists, and asked for their names.

I told them that I treat patients regardless of their identity, according to my oath as a doctor; even if they were national guards (which we actually I did) or American soldiers. And any way, if I do not want to treat the insurgents, I have no choice, because they were armed and masked. I would do anything they tell to do. Few days later, one of the soldiers came in the room, did not say anything, kicked me again on my face and left”.

Dr. Jamil, a surgeon for 20 years, was arrested and very badly beaten. When we met him, 22 days later, his face was still blue. His nose was broken, and a big opening in his head: “They beat me on my eyes and nose, kicked me with boots under my chin. One of them threatened me if I do not talk after he counts to three, he would shoot me. He began counting, after three he turned the gun upside down and hit me on the back of my head. For days I could not move or see. They threatened us of abusing our families. For some reason they took my picture while I was bleeding, I could hear the camera click”.

It's because we don't really think of someone who doesn't LOOK like an American doctor as being a real doctor.

And we also don't think that people who look like American humans are real humans. And if you think for one moment that has anything to do with skin color alone, remember what they would do to a lilly white French doctor, or a gay doctor, or a female doctor.

When you recruit children right out of highschool in Podunka, USA and hand them a gun and tell them to shoot everything that doesn't look American or U.S. Military, this is what you get.

in germany until 14. As a queer white german american child I was a minority three times over - I really, genuinely didn't know there was a difference until we moved back to the states and everyone was so freaky about skin color and cultural origin, and I'm not just talking about white folks.

To tell the truth, I still don't get it. Do blind people "get it?", or does someone have to tell them they're missing out on all the opportunity to judge people based on something they can't even make sense of?

I know "seeing eye" dogs are supposed to help you across intersections and things, but in a perfectly racist world would we also train them to bark three times if you're talking to a mexican or nuzzle your leg and whimper if the person you're talking to appears to be of african-american descent?

It really is weird to me how hard people have to work to be racist.

I used this on my Englisch Club at a Gymnasium. It took them the better part of 10 minutes before the idea that the BIG elephant could be the MOTHER dawned on them in simultaneous pubescent group-think. It was the funniest class I ever conducted. I asked them to explain their assumptions to me based on the words and the picture. All in their second (or third) language. My STAR pupil, a 13 yr-old Turkish girl who had gotten it quite early on, yet had to "convince" her colleagues to follow HER train of thought, went OFF on a tirade in Deutsch. I cleared a space that she could have her say...

It is SO EASY for me to get through to even the most ignorant aber herzlich Dorfbewohner, the racist subtleties of zum Beispiel, "Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass"... "I just never thought about it that way! Das stimmt!" Try that with an American :eyes: (as I'm sure you have overandoverandover ;-)).

Speaking of the blind, a Brit acquaintance was Stevie Wonder's Tonmeister. There was a discussion and Marvin offered an opinion. One of the upstart Wonderites tried to shut him down with the "But YOU'RE not BLACK" meme. Marvin countered with "And just HOW do YOU KNOW THAT?" The entire room went graveyard silent, then Stevie BURST OUT LAUGHING!!!

Speaking of dogs, it's just so easy. "My dog has a reaaction to black people." Watching the owner walk the dog and JERK THE LEASH every time "the other" passes on the sidewalk tells you ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.
