Yankee Kerry is on a roll, but the South awaits
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/01/29/wus29.xml&sSheet=/portal/2004/01/29/ixportal.html&secureRefresh=true&_requestid=169685

As a Boston blueblood, he is a Yankee patrician to his bootstraps. But, fresh from his two resounding victories in the first electoral tests of the race, he comes with a following wind akin to the momentum that swept Sherman's armies through South Carolina in 1865.

The main obstacle in his path is a local boy, John Edwards, a telegenic senator for neighbouring North Carolina. His fresh face belies his 50 years, and his message of "hope" has given him the highest approval ratings of any Democratic candidate.

But after an at-best satisfactory tied third place in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, Mr Edwards flew in to South Carolina knowing he has to win its primary on Tuesday to stay in the race.

As Mr Kerry's critics keep saying, in recent decades northerners have been trounced when running for the White House. The last three Democrats to win the White House were southerners. "I don't think the challenge is to shake off a Yankee label," said Marcus Jadotte, Mr Kerry's deputy campaign manager. "Given his military record he fits well with South Carolina The challenge is the native son. But we can compete."

1. And after the south...
We're on to California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Washington...

I wonder how southerners Edwards and Clark will do against Kerry in those delegate-rich states.

3. Also....If he does really good on Feb.3
i.e. Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, North Dakota...

I wouldn't put it away for Kerry very fast....there's always the chance Hillary could weigh in for Clark and then there goes New York as well....

4. Me personally I like John Kerry, and I'm from the South....
but you do him no favor among Southerners by posting this:

"he comes with a following wind akin to the momentum that swept Sherman's armies through South Carolina in 1865."

But reading your user name: "Thankfully_in_Britain" and if you are English...you may also want to stroll down memory lane and remember the ass-kicking your country took at Cowpens, South Carolina (Jan. 17, 1781).

Well that was what the article said. The Telegraph is a right wing rag, but I thought the article was worth posting anyway.

This is a Kerry thread, I must warn you that I have heard some of my fellow countrymen slagging him off down the pub recently. The thing was, I found telling them about his National Service policy seemed to change their minds a little, and that is the one thing in Kerry's platform that I am apprehensive about. I do worry about Kerry's image though, as he is one of the better candidates. (I currently can't choose between Dean & Clark)

The weird thing was, nobody seemed to interested in Dean's scream when I asked!
