Reid sharpens attack on Bush, GOP over Iraq, CIA leak

ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Calling the Senate into a rare closed session, Democratic leader Harry Reid said Tuesday the American people and U.S. troops deserve to know the details of how the United States became engaged in the war in Iraq. Reid took aim at both President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress in a stinging condemnation of U.S. policy in Iraq as well on several domestic fronts.

In a speech on the Senate floor, he demanded the Senate go into closed session and the public was ordered out of the chamber. Reid, D-Nev., said he called the unusual session in the wake of the indictment of Vice President Dick Cheney and the "cloud" it has cast over the Bush administration.

"A cloud also hangs over this Republican-controlled Congress for its unwillingness to hold this Republican administration accountable for its misdeeds on all of these issues," Reid said. "Time and time again, this Republican-controlled Congress has consistently chosen to put its political interests ahead of our national security," he said.

"They have repeatedly chosen to protect the Republican administration rather than get to the bottom of what happened and why." Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.
