I'm relaxing following surgery two weeks ago (sinuses), my head hurts, I feel like crap and the phone rings. I get a recorded message about a poor Mrs. Lopez whose daughter was at a Planned Parenthood...yada yada yada...

Here is a copy of the e-mail I fired off....

As the father of a sixteen year-old girl I am very concerned about her well-being. Hopefully, she will not become pregnant until she is married. However, were she to become pregnant, I want her to be able to obtain assistance WITHOUT being obligated to have either her mother (a Christian evangelical nut) or myself (I have my own problems) notified.

I can only imagine the trauma that other girls will go through if they are closed off from the option of safe abortions. I PREFER to SAVE my DAUGHTER's life.

I uphold your right to believe that abortions are wrong, but I steadfastly refuse to let you and your followers legislate my morality.

Therefore, I will vote with the majority of other Californias in rejecting this proposition that would endanger the lives of thousands of young women.

"I prefer to save my daughter's life." Succinct and to the point.

I would hope that any children I had would grow up safe and strong. I would also make damn sure they knew all about their own bodies and how those bodies work. I would teach them to listen to authority but to treat any pronouncement with a bit of skepticism. Follow rules that make sense, question those that seem arbitrary. And if you choose to break a rule, be prepared to offer a good explanation or accept the consequences without complaint.

Because my sons and my daughters would belong to themselves and no one else.
