Here's a copy of the letter I'm mailing to my PA senators. If anyone wants to use any or all of this for their own letters, feel free. And if anyone has any suggestions, I won't be mailing it till this afternoon. Thanks.
As a registered Independent, I am one of those "swing votes" that you politicians are constantly saying is so important. Although I tend towards the liberal end of the spectrum on many issues, I have voted for Republicans nearly as often as I have voted for Democrats. Therefore, please understand this: if the United States Senate caves in to the most extreme fringe of the Republican base and confirms the nomination of Judge Alito, I will NEVER AGAIN in my life cast a vote for any Republican candidate for office. Ever. Judge Alito is NOT a mainstream candidate in the mold of Sandra Day O’Connor. He is not even a candidate in the mold of John Roberts. He is an extremist whose “judicial philosophy” would force women to seek permission from their husbands before undergoing medical procedures, who has “legislated from the bench” by overturning the will of the people with regards to machine gun ownership, and who believes that unwarranted strip-searches of ten-year olds are just peachy-keen.
All of the talk of "up or down" votes rings rather hollow in light of the fact that the hard-line right-wing of your party "Borked" Harriet Miers' nomination before she even got to committee. Any attempt to enforce the "nuclear option" in the event of a Democratic filibuster will be seen by myself, and other liberals, progressives, moderates, and independents as a declaration of war. If the Republican party chooses to pander to the most extreme theocratic, corporatist and fascistic elements of their base, foregoing the will of the majority of Americans for the sake of political expediency, they deserve to be voted out of existence.
Please consider the fact that the Supreme Court SHOULD reflect America, and that America is a 5-4 nation. We American moderates, Independents, SWING VOTERS would like to have someone on the court who looks at both sides of each issue, much as we ourselves do. If the Republican Party thinks that we are less important than the fringe extremists of your “base”, I hope you are all prepared to enjoy losing future elections by 25-35% margins.
Sincerely, etc.
