I never saw that as Bush loyalty. Since you live in Texas, I have no need to explain the whole Texas thang. SRV was invited by who was then a legally elected (albeit criminal) president-elect to play at his dance, and he obliged, because it isn't an opportunity that comes along every day. Some people put obligation and country before politics. SRV was accepting a presidential invitation, not a Republican one.

SRV used to speak out against Apartheid at concerts in the 80's. I doubt seriously he was a Republican. If it were the second coming of LBJ, he would have been there.

I did, essentially, two interviews with him, one in a crowded room and another in a van that traveled for 17 minutes. I greatly admire him, and have supported him enthusiastically on DU, but there was no relationship to speak of.

I met Dennis three times over the last year before I took the job. The fourth time, I spent about 100 hours in a van with him in Iowa, and watched him speak in place after place. It was extraordinary.
