What is wrong with conservatives? (Cervical cancer vaccine)

Debate rages on use of cervical cancer vaccine
While almost 100% effective, some contend use condones teen sex

Washington -- A new vaccine that protects against cervical cancer has set up a clash between health advocates who want to use the shots aggressively to prevent thousands of malignancies and social conservatives who say immunizing teen-agers could encourage sexual activity.

Because the vaccine protects against a sexually transmitted virus, many conservatives oppose making it mandatory, citing fears that it could send a subtle message condoning sexual activity before marriage. Several leading groups that promote abstinence are meeting this week to formulate official policies on the vaccine.

---------------------------

Are these people insane? A vaccine that could make (two specific strains of) cervical cancer extinct in this country is being opposed on the basis of some contrived "subtle message" that would encourage premarital sex...What in the holy fuck is wrong with these assholes?

1. Could you explain something to me
Is that the only way women get cervical cancer? I didn't know it had been proven conclusively if it is.

10. From WebMd
"Cervical cancer is caused by severe abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. Most precancerous or cancerous cell changes occur in the cervix at the transformation zone because these cells normally undergo constant change. During this natural process of change, some cervical cells can become abnormal, especially if you are infected with high-risk types of HPV."

And on HPV

"More than 100 types of human papillomaviruses (HPVs)—which cause genital warts—have been identified. You may be infected with more than one type.

HPV types 6 and 11 cause most visible genital warts. They are spread easily from person to person. However, they are rarely associated with the development of cervical cancer in women.
HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35 are strongly associated with precancerous and cancerous changes of the cervix. Nearly all cervical cancer tumors contain one of these types, which are sometimes called high-risk types. However, many women may be infected with high-risk types of HPV but never develop precancerous changes or cancer."

19. Didn't we just have this argument
Here, on this board, about bird flu vaccinations?

We were all on the other side of the argument for that one. I'm all for any vaccination that will limit the risk of infection of any kind.

11. Here's some more info on cervical cancer and the virus link for you
Since the late 1800s, researchers have suspected that cervical cancer was sexually transmitted. Medical reports noted that nuns and virgins were not likely to have cervical cancer, and that women who were married to men who traveled a great deal or who had previous wives who died of cervical cancer were more likely to develop cervical cancer ("The Cervical Cancer Virus," 1995). Today, certain types of HPV have been established as causal agents in the development of the cellular changes that may lead to cervical cancer (Janicek & Averette, 2001). Large studies have found that HPV is present in more than 93 percent of cervical cancer tumors (NCIa). HPV 16 is responsible for about 50 percent of cervical cancers. HPV 18, 31, and 45 account for another 30 percent of cases. Other HPV types are associated with the remaining 20 percent of cases (Shah, 1997).

It appears that most all cases are due to virus.

18. Not the only way
But a documented, and proven factor if the virus is present. Something like 60% of women with the virus, even asymptomatic, are at a higher risk of cervical cancer.

6. They just absoloutely hate sex
They have some kind of intense fear or hatred of sex and don't want anyone enjoying it. They want us to all keep our pants on at all times out of fear. So why are they reproducing?

12. Hey . . .
. . . we live in a country where getting a blow job is grounds for getting kicked out of office, but being responsible for the unjust and needless death of 30 thousand or so people is quite OK. It's a weird place we live in. Really weird. It's what happens when the religiously insane get a loud voice.

13. Wrong question. What is right about Conservatives?
Absolutely nothing.

That entire argument is strange. What teenager thinks, OMG, no. I might get cervical cancer. Fundies are even against teenagers knowing that they have a cervix. Must less that it can become cancerous.

What a strange bunch of repressed individuals.

16. aaarrrghhh
I am so frustrated with this freakin' mentality. My grandmother died of cervical cancer - leaving my father without a mother at age 5. How can any so called Christian conservative think that was a good thing. More over, my maternal great-grandmother died of a botched abortion (alcoholic husband, three kids, great depression) and my grandmother grew up without a mother... is this really what they want to return to???

17. When I was a teen, we didn't worry about disease, we worried about...
...Getting CAUGHT!

It was harder to catch the boys, though, their bellies didn't get big and they didn't have periods to miss in the first place. Good birth control made the preacher's job almost impossible. Especially the ones who ran the "Home for Un-wed Mothers".

Newsflash to Xian Murka: Your kids are fucking, you're just too damn stupid and in denial to acknowledge it.
