Why Are Republicans Such FUCKING COWARDS???
This is sort of a rhetorical question, although, you're thoughts and discussion on the issue are, as always, quite welcome.

The reason I bring this up is, as may not be surmised by the title, the nomination of this Alito character; christo-fascist super douchebag.

Why is it that they are so cowardly, so afraid to engage overtly in the culture war they so desperately crave? Why are they such cowards that they can not come right out an profess their ideals and beliefs? Come now, we all know they want to outlaw abortion and relegate women, minorities and essentially all cultural issues to the dark ages. We know they want a religious and fascist state. Why not be proud of it? Why hide it?

They are predictably couching this Alito piece of filth as more moderate, suggesting perhaps he is not as hard line as one might think. Evidence for your perusal as to this allegation via the esteemable Kos:

It's an interesting psychological phenomenon this stealth ideology. I for one am proud of my ideology. I trumpet my defense of women's rights and reproductive health issues and my championing of minority rights. I am fully engaged in the protection of personal privacy and make no bones about it. I do not hide my liberal philosophy nor my ideals. Why is it that these so called "conservatives", even your every day run of the mill one's that you meet on the street, try so hard to HIDE their ideology? I can't tell you how many conversations I've had w/ these people where they deny that they are against equal rights for women and minorities, where they profess a respect for individual rights and privacy etc., and yet time and time again they give patently absurd defenses of positions that their so called "leaders" have assumed that are in direct contrast to these ideals.

3. It all comes down to sex and insecurity

these provenly small penised republican men
feel inadequate to compete in a free open society
and thus they feel obligated to inflict their will
upon everyone else who is not like them. It gives
them a sense of power that their loins cannot provide.

4. The base isn't afraid to articulate the hate, just the Repub politicians.
The elected Repubs don't believe most of the nonsense they're trying to "cloak." They just know it gets them campaign money. They also know how easily the party could be marginalized into wingnut oblivion if they're not careful.

5. It's the end of the republican ascendancy.
Why did Bush rely on stealth, why no repug sen. come out against Roe? Why is everything hidden behind code words?

Because they know that their positions are shared by a small minority.

Dems shout from the rooftops that they won't accept a nominee that would overturn Roe. They know that their positions are in the majority.

Senate repugs hope that they can vote for Alioto and pretend to be surprised when he overturns Roe and starts blocking statutes left and right. They know that if republican office holders get blamed, its curtains. On the other hand, the religious righties are going to take their social issues and go home now, having done all they can to thwart the majority.

It's the end. The end of the republican ascendancy.

6. What will it look like after?
I can see the Repub image so badly damaged that only proud fundies will want the party.

Then what, a marriage of the non-fundy Repubs and the DLC into the Dem party?

The true left becomes a new movement?

Is there a vulnerable Senate seat in your state?

7. Borderline personality disorders
They need chaos and dissention to feel normal. They're unable to form normal meaningful relationships or relate other human beings in any way that matters so they use covert and subtle passive-aggessive behaviors to make sure the tension they crave is there. Once in a while there will be an explosive, or a manic reactionary type who makes a lot of noise covering for those who are mentally challenged chickenshits. They can't come out and say what they mean because then the rest of us won't play. They've created this "polarized" enviroment in this country that they thrive in. Arguement and chaos whenever they need it. Loudmouths to cover for them when they need to hide.

9. You know, you're right
They ARE cowards. They cloak their prejudices and their hatreds in other words, but if it's what they truly believe, why not simply admit it? Well, simply put, it's because they know that the only votes they would get would be from the fundies and the wing-nuts.

Look at the code for stripping wealth from the middle class and poor, and directing it up-wards, toward the rich...they refer to it as "tax reform", and then turn around and gut social programs that, quite honestly, are a matter of life and death for some, and turn it into "fiscal responsibility." What bullshit! They are self-serving, narrow minded bigots, who screech war, but refuse to serve, and claim to hate "intrusive and burdensome government", until they want to spy on our sex lives.

They are cowards, bullies, and liars. Corrupt, arrogant, and disgusting. They are responsible for turning our country into hell for many, many of our citizens. And...they don't care.
