Howard Dean, You are still the man
When Al Gore dropped out I was devastated. He was the winner of the white house in 2000 only to have it stolen from him. I hoped he would reconsider, but knew he wouldn't. Gore is a man of integrity and when he said he wasn't running--I knew it to be the truth.

So I had to find another candidate. I thought about John Kerry. I like John Kerry. I think he has done some wonderful things in his career, but I just couldn't support him due to the Iraqi Resolution vote and I was also fed up by the inability of the Washington leadership to stand up to Bush on a host of issues.

Maybe Dennis Kucinich? He certainly had a sterling record and all the talk about him being unelectable didn't mean a thing to me as I have supported supposed lost causes before including Jesse Jackson in 1988. I was leaning towards him.

Then I started reading about the man from Vermont. Oh, I knew of him because I love politics and following it and I have friends in Vermont who have discussed their governor with me. So I began to read about him and what he accomplished in Vermont especially in the areas of healthcare and it impressed me. I was also impressed that he stood up to the right wingers and haters and signed into law the Civil Union Bill--and then didn't duck it as an issue when he ran for re-election in 2000. He seemed to be a man of conviction. Of course his stand on the war only made me more enthusiastic about him.

I began volunterring for him and found that alot of people were also supporters and watched as his campaign grew. It was a great thing to see people who never were involved in politics or gave up on the process coming back not because they hated the president (they did) but because they loved Howard Dean and what he stands for.

To me he still stands for something pretty wonderful. He stood up to Bush when few Democrats seemed willing to do so. On issue after issue he drew distinctions between what he believed in and what Bush was doing. He showed the country that you can have campaign finance reform if you have a candidate who you believe in and who believes in you. You have hundreds of thousands of people making small donations of less than $100 coming together to oppose the $1,000 fundraisers and corporate support that Bush relies on.

His campaign is being dismissed (as usual) by the pundits tonight. He didn't do as well as it was hoped for in Iowa and New Hampshire. But he is still the same Howard Dean who stood up against a war which was wrong and stood up against an administration which is one of the most evil and corrupt in our times. He is still the same Howard Dean I will continue to work for and vote for in Wisconsin on February 17th. I will be with Dean until the last dog comes home.

Yeah, it's hell right now. The rough road and all that, but...

"Tibetans say that obstacles in a hard journey, such as hailstones, wind, and unrelenting rains, are the work of demons, anxious to test the sincerity of the pilgrims and eliminate the fainthearted among them." - Peter Matthiessen

So, onward we go in full sincerity.

Besides, since I'm quoting:

"The best reformers the world has ever seen are those who commence on themselves." - George Bernard Shaw

This is true of Dean. He clearly works to improve himself every day. It's one of the major pieces of the man that attracts me to him. It's what makes this journey worth it. Dean is a man worth fighting for, because he will fight to do the right thing, even if saying or doing the politically expedient thing would be easier.

Cheers!
