LAT op/ed (10/30): “Saving the second term” - Good advice Bush won’t take
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 05:46 AM by Nothing Without Hope
It’s interesting to speculate on what it would take from his own party to push Bush to make these very sensible, fundamental changes. Cheney does seem to be looking more marginalized all the time, but he’s still very much in power, as is Rumsfeld. And Bush does appear to be addicted to the care and tending of Rove.

Or put another way, who within his trusted circle would dare to suggest these changes to him?

This editorial is critical but gives constructive suggestions that would certainly be in the country’s interest and would likely increase the public’s approval of Bush and the GOP in general. Will the non-insane part of his party force something like this agenda of forced retirements and reorganization of power on him to save their party? After all, even with hackable voting machines there’s only so much of a gap that can be overcome without raising suspicions to the point that the “victory” would not be accepted.

Another thing you'll notice in this article: attention is NOT given to Bush's own terrible decisions and insistence on the worst possible policies. No, the blame is put on the people around him. Nor is there any hint that Bush himself might be corrupt or anything but honest and well-wishing.

I interpret this as good advice on one hand, but also reflecting pressure from the non-insanel wing of the GOP to swing away from policies that are bringing ruin on both the country and their precious party. I can't see Bush listening without being forced in some way. What would it take?

Saving the second term

(snip)

For starters, it's time to retire "the architect." Karl Rove may have escaped indictment on Friday, but in a larger sense "Rovism" — the notion of governing from the far right to pander to the party's most active extremists — has been indicted, tried and convicted. Regardless of whether his top political advisor stays on the payroll, Bush needs to dust off his old claim of being "a uniter, not a divider" if he is to have any chance of regaining his political footing and building a positive legacy.

Vice President Dick Cheney's days as a leading voice in this administration should also be numbered. It would be a considerable favor to Bush if Cheney decided to step down from office now, but don't expect that to happen.

Still, Cheney should spend the bulk of his time at undisclosed locations and funerals for foreign dignitaries, at least when he is not testifying at his former chief of staff's trial, which would be an unseemly spectacle.

Bush would do well to loosen the unprecedented control exerted by the vice president's office across a number of agencies and departments. He needs to bring in seasoned advisors from the more moderate wing of his party to occupy key White House positions, so they can prod him to govern from the center and mend ties with moderate Democrats. Someone also ought to tap Donald Rumsfeld's shoulder and tell him it's time to go.

(snip)

Related: another thread decrying the recent rash of editorials popping out all over in which authors pontificate on what it would take to "bring Bush back" into a more powerful position. Again, these articles typically do not condemn Bush for his shallowness, constant mendacity, and profound corruption, but rather frame the discussion in terms of how certain people around him - most notably Libby and sometimes Cheney - made trouble. GOP talking points - they are trying to save their party.

thread title: Another "How can Bush come back?" story (ugh!)

The LAT editorial discussed in this thread at least gives excellent advice along with the implication that nothing is Bush's fault. Not that he ever hears anything he doesn't want to, let alone consider taking responsibility rather than looking for fall guys and daddy figures.

1. When Things Turn to DooDoo, Bush** Lurches Ever Further to the Right
When he crowns himself Emperor and declares martial law,
it will be the Dominionist Fundies he will turn to to back him up.

Rovism: If you pander to your base repeatedly and then shaft them with Miers and huge deficits you get only the base liking you and then you get a shrinking base. Bush's poll numbers have been in continual decline for five years except for the huge jump upwards right after 9-11.
