Thank you, DUers!
We survived hurricane Wilma. Many of you stayed up with me all night Sunday night while I was afraid. My husband had boarded up the house and tied everything down, but he wasn't worried. For some reason, I was especially uneasy and couldn't sleep. Thank you to everyone who talked to me and helped me through it. It would definitely have been a lot harder without my DU friends.

The first part of the storm was relatively easy. We thought it would be the worst since it usually is. We went outside during the eye and didn't see any damage at all. Then came the second half and it was MUCH worse. Things were hitting the house. At one point, something hit the hurricane shutter very hard in the room where I was trying to hook up my laptop. It was a huge piece of solar panel from our neighbor's roof. I'm glad we had that hurricane panel on the window, or it would have come through the glass and hurt (or killed) me.

Boca doesn't look the same anymore. There are trees and power lines down. Many people lost their screen enclosures, including our neighbor behind us. We only got a few tears in our screens. Many roofs lost several tiles. We only lost about six. Cars are w/out windshields and back windows. The houses are all standing, just damaged. Our solar panels are still on the roof and we won't know if they're damaged until we're able to start the pool pump.

We lost electricity early in the morning on Monday and still do not have it back. It could be as early as tomorrow when we get it back, or as late as Nov. 22. The phone went out Monday afternoon and came back late this afternoon. The cell phones work some of the time.

We were as prepared as we could get. We had a freezer full of ice, plenty of food, and containers full of water. We do not have a generator, but it was almost impossible to get gas until yesterday. One of our neighbors let us hook up to his generator a few days ago, so we can keep the refrigerator (mostly cat food at this point) reasonably cold and the laptop charged.

The nearest distribution site for ice and water was 15 miles away. We decided to do with what we had since we didn't want to use up our gas ... first, in the line to get the ice, and then in another line trying to buy gas. You would think they could get it right by now.

We have not tried to call FEMA yet. That would have been an exercise in frustration using the cell phones. Perhaps we will call tomorrow or Monday. We really don't have much to claim, especially compared to our neighbors. We have been very fortunate.

Still, it is not easy living in the dark and taking cold showers. I don't know what we'll do about clean clothes once we run out, but I'm sure I can manage to hand wash some necessities.

The battery-powered TV is getting its first good work-out and does very well. We're on our 3rd set of D batteries and still holding strong. The TV never mentions our part of the world, though. This morning, they said that South FL is "getting back to normal." I guess we don't count ... why does that not surprise me?

I walked through the neighborhood and took a few pictures which I will post once I get more power and a faster connection. We will get through this. It's more of an inconvenience than "life and death" at this point. The stores are starting to open and we'll be able to buy gas if we don't mind spending half the day in line.

That's all I can think of. I'm tired from not sleeping and emotionally exhausted. There's something very sad about it all, even though we seem to have come out of it in very good shape. I feel like crying most of the time, but I have tried to concentrate on cleaning things up. Sometimes the distraction helps.

I really miss being able to spend more time with my DU friends. If I don't post for a while, it's because I can't get enough power or a connection. I am safe, though. I hope everyone else who was in harm's way is able to check in. I've noticed that we're still waiting for mexicoxpat and I hope the problem is one of power and/or internet connection.

Thank you for all the warm, golden thoughts, prayers, candles, and all the expressions of support. The experience would have been much more difficult without you.

5. Thank you so much, niyad.
I so much appreciate all the kind thoughts, candles, prayers, and every expression of support. The storm is frightening, but the aftermath has its own problems to deal with.

Right now I'm sitting in the dark, wondering how long before my battery runs out. The generator has been turned off for the night. I'm so glad to be back in touch.

3. May I suggest you purchase a solar shower.
It was the only way I was able to have a warm shower during the 2 weeks we were without power.

So glad you are safe.

Remember how blessed you are, it will help you when your patience wains. If you need someone to commiserate with regarding the frustrations of poor cell phone access, dealing with FEMA, the Red Cross, and your insurance company, just pmail me.

Take care of yourself and remember to just take your time and find the humor in occurrences when you can.

Yes, I will PM you ... would like to know more about that solar shower and I'll be glad to talk with you about the other pains in the rear (collectively, FEMA, RC, cell phones, etc.).

You are right that we are blessed. I don't know why our brains still let us get upset when we still have everything that's important. My sister is sending wine and chocolate from CA ... life is good. :)

Thanks for the hug. You know how much that helps!

15. You buy a solar shower at any sporting goods store or in the
camping section of any store. It is a large vinyl bag that holds 5 gallons of water. You leave it out in the sun and by the evening, the water is perfect for your shower. It has a little spout on the end of the hose and a little shower head, you hang it from a tree or something and you have a hot/warm shower.

It was great.

I'm here if you need to chat. :hi:

14. Black plastic bag with water in it, warmed by the sun
You can buy official "solar shower" (tm) or figure out some way to make your own, perhaps a bucket painted black (black absorbs the sun's heat better than white, making the water warmer faster). Official solar showers (tm) have a hose and nozzle and a place to hang it up with.

I saw a thing advertised in a magazine once called a "solar dryer" also. I called that a clothesline.

Some people want me to drive a car to NO, if so, I'll let you know. Hey, glad you're doing ok.

I learned about solar showers and living out and without when in AK. Washed diapers in a bucket with a plunger, rang out with wringer, "dried" under a blue tarp only took 3 days before I ran out and then actually dried them by the fire.

I don't know where we'd find a camping store in Boca, but I know lots of catalogs where I can get one from ... might order one tonight! And, according to Murphy's (or someone else's) law, if I order a solar shower, the electricity will come on before it arrives. Thanks for the tip!

Ever since I knew merh and Swampy went through Katrina, I've been obsessed with getting a plan together. Maybe having a plan and a kit will put off the next Big One.

Or at least, now I have two radios, gas masks and some MREs to munch on while waiting for fricken' FEMA

Much love to all our DU survivors. This whole year, we could have done without.

22. I did notice that....The "boy" storms were no big deal, but piss off one
of the females and...well, the rest is history!

I'm still angry that FEMA had 4 trucks in my county which had minimal damage. We only lost power for, at most, a couple of days (in my case, we never lost it at all). A few downed trees were our main problem, yet FEMA had 4 freaking trucks giving out ice in our town. They were desperately needed an hour south of here where people were suffering but they were sent here instead.

And the stories aren't getting better. Lead story in todays Jackson Clarion Ledger was about how FEMA was holding back reconstruction efforts through their collosal incompetence.

I wish you guys the absolute best of luck. You're gonna need it.

34. You said it ... colossal incompetence!
I had not heard about them holding back reconstruction, though. They didn't talk about that on our local stations.

Why is it that FEMA shows up in the wrong locations? I think their problem this time was that they couldn't get gas ... I'm a little vague on that part. And you couldn't even find out where the distribution sites were going to be until they set them up for that day. They were a moving target.

We'll do OK, thanks. We do have little enough damage that we could scrape enough money together to pay for it ourselves if we have to. We were so fortunate!

are still suffering. I can't begin to imagine what my life would be like if I was taken from my home, my life, my network, and thrown out to sink or swim. I would be lost and unsure of what to do. These people have lost the very foundation of their lives and I can't begin to imagine how hard that must be.

I'm so glad your damage is minimal. This year has been a real nightmare for all of us.

Hah ... comforting words or response from FEMA, DHS, or anyone in any official capacity? They can't even get ice to us. I think Wilma is a done deal in their book. On to other things now. Whenever the news mentioned Boca, they were at the executive airport talking about the corporate jets. I sat there watching with my mouth hanging open. Yeah, we all have a jet at the executive airport. :sarcasm:

Jeb doesn't have a single reason to pat himself on the back, but that doesn't stop him. We had plenty of gas, but no way to pump it. Thanks, Jeb! :dunce:

We have so much to be thankful for. Many of our neighbors do not have hurricane panels and they either watched through the windows or hid in closets. We did feel safe during the storm. The screen enclosure that came down behind sent long aluminum beams through the window of the neighbor's house and their solar panels and roof tiles made frightening noises. They are all safe, though, and happy to have survived it. :)
