I haven't looked too hard but I read that a prominent Neo-Con has longstanding links to Italian intelligence and may have been the one who pushed the Niger Uranium stuff to the Administration. I believe it was Larry Johnson who reported it earlier this week. But, yeah, I haven't had time to look into it, but I'd bet dollars to donuts Johnson has it right. I need to look into some Neo-Con backgrounds and see who it is that has the Italy ties.

2. Michael Ledeen
It's been discussed here for over a year -- it's easy to find stuff on if you google.

(snip)
The War Party is in a hurry. Even as they prepare to take indictments and fight the charges of a conspiracy to lie us into war, the neocons and their allies in the media are laying the groundwork for the next war. We're on the Middle Eastern escalator, as I've said before: there is no way to contain the conflict we've unleashed in Iraq. Michael Ledeen, named by a former CIA operations officer as the chief conduit of the Niger uranium forgeries, continually urges this administration to go "Faster, please!" – and there are ominous indications that the foot is off the brake. The neocons know they're running a marathon, desperately trying to outrun the consequences of their own trail of deception. Will the truth catch up with Hadley, Ledeen, et al., before they can do any more damage to American interests in the Middle East – and spill more blood?
(snip)

Repeat:
"...Michael Ledeen, named by a former CIA operations officer as the chief conduit of the Niger uranium forgeries..."

6. yup for quite a while
I didn't know the Italy stuff though. I'm a bit out of the game on PNAC and everything. I had been published on them a few years ago, but I haven't dug much deeper since. Been writing about other stuff etc. Ledeen is an interesting guy though. He still is trying to go after Iran and Syria. I think even most Republicans are just thinking: "Enough already." He's a beauty alright.

9. Stephen Hadley
Stephen Hadley secretly met with Niccolo Pollari, head of SISMI, in Washington in early September of 2002.

Pollari had been trying to talk to the CIA about something (presumably the Niger yellowcake "documents") for two years and the CIA kept telling him to go away. So he backtracked them.
