60. george ryan killed the ERA, and the willis children
he was the floor leader in the illinois house, and it was a the last chance for the amendment. he personally killed it. so i hated the bastard from way back when.
as secretary of state, unqualified commercial drivers could get a license in return for a contribution to his campaign fund. 6 children burned to death in a minivan, while their parents watched helplessly, as a direct result.

65. this stuff was coming out during his re-election campaign
it was a textbook republican campaign, including a spin machine that defused an ad by glen poshard. he ran an ad about the crash, and ryan turned it into- glen poshard uses the willis family's grief for political purposes. the family was completely behind the ad, but they managed to convince people that the were appalled. the chicago tribune also swallowed a phoney plan to eliminate tolls on the local tollways, to deflect attention from fawell's indictment. (i think it was fawell.)
just amazing.

74. Here's some further reading on Reichert
“Reichert accepted his first $5,000 from DeLay's PAC on September 20, 2004 and accepted another $5,000 on October 15 – just days after DeLay was rebuked by the House Ethics Committee. A Texas grand jury recently indicted Jim Ellis, who runs the PAC, on a money-laundering charge and indicted two other DeLay aides affiliated with another DeLay PAC.

http://www.wa-democrats.org/press_room/press_10-25-04d.php

“Reichert received a whopping $20,000 from ARMPAC. (snip). DeLay also campaigned for Reichert last year.

Earlier this year, Reichert and McMorris voted to weaken the ethics rules in a move meant to protect DeLay.”

http://www.wa-democrats.org/press_room/press20050929.php

And, from Daily KOS:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/11/193443/39

“Twenty-six U.S. representatives received the maximum contribution allowed from former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's political action committee this election cycle, according to an analysis released today by the Campaign for America's Future. The data, prepared by the Center for Responsive Politics, outlines $10,000 contributions since the beginning of 2005 from Rep. DeLay's ARMPAC (Americans for a Republican Majority PAC).

The article goes on to name the 26, including DAVE REICHERT.

27. Many of those are not actually investigations
A lot of those listed are in there because they got money from Abramoff or from DeLay's PAC. But it isn't correct to say they are being investigated -- unless there is an actual investigation by a grand jury or a congressional committee or the FBI or some other law enforcement agency.

It probably should just say "scandal" or "sleaze," which definitely applies to anyone who took money from DeLay or Abramoff.

Nominated anyway. Great comprehensive list.

Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 12:56 AM by Blue_In_AK
...for links. This is a Republican state and almost ALL of them are in trouble for one thing or another. They just don't "get" ethics. Surprise, surprise. You could write a book on Ted and Ben Stevens alone. (Check out Adak Fisheries.) Murkowski, of course, is entertaining on so many levels. His attorney general had to resign for ethics violations. The chairman of the state Republican party, Randy Ruedrich, was investigated (by the aforesaid attorney general) and came up wanting, but I believe he's still in charge. One of the state representatives, Scott Ogan, resigned in the face of a recall. One Republican congressman has even proposed a law making it ILLEGAL for anyone to discuss publicly a pending ethics investigation. That's one way to take care of it, I suppose. They're really just amusing as hell -- I don't know how they keep getting elected.

I've been googling different search word combos and have found lotsa links, but some of the info is probably duplicative. Would it be okay to make a post with pretty much just the links and then you would do the comparisons for the list updates?

Also, what do you think about putting a info post onto each of the state discussion forums directing DUers to your post and asking for contributions to the list? I'd be up for doing this if you think it's okay.

67. The Honorable Gov's. Evan Mecham and Fife Symington (Arizona)
The Honorable Governor Evan Mecham, 1987-1988:

Failed to report a $350,000 from a contributor to his campaign for Governor as required by campaign laws; loaned himself $80,000 of public money to help his failing car dealership; allegations of covering up a death threat by one of his appointees to a government employee. Was the first US Governor to face removal from office by three means simultaneously: impeachment by the legislature, a scheduled recall election, and a criminal indictment.

The Honorable Governor Fife Symington, 1991-1997:

Resigned after being convicted of bank fraud charges. Conviction overturned due to improper dismissal of a juror during deliberations. Pardoned by Clinton, probably so he would stop wasting the Federal government's time and money investigating him.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Gov. Lingle (R-Says She's Moderate but has Karen Hughes on Speed Dial) had to fill a vacancy in the Legislature created when Ken Hiraki resigned to go work as a lobbyist for the phone company (a division of Carlyle!) Hawai'i elections law states that the Governor must appoint a member of the same party to fill such a vacancy; Hiraki is a Democrat. So what does she do? Appoint the biggest DINO she can find? No, not good enough: she got one of her repuke cronies to re-register as Dem and promptly appointed her to the seat -- only to find that said crony has a criminal record!! Stay tuned...

I'm really surprised that this hasn't gotten more traction in a local media scene that has far too many outlets chasing very little hard news (missing hikers can dominate the headlines for days!).

Edit: Uber-repuke Jim Henshaw, failed legislative candidate from Windward O'ahu, actually wrote an LTTE condemning this sleazefest. Go figure.

Sorry for the double post.

Here's a posted response from the Calif. DU state board:

Keep an eye on ex mayor Dick Murphy too. He might be investigated as part of the Pensiongate problems later. Not sure if he's in their sights right now. The pensiongate councilmen that got kicked out earlier were Democrats though. I also recall that Duncan Hunter had a very sizable count of similar contributions that Hastert had. Hastert is of course being investigated for his due to the Turkish contributions that may have influenced his handling of the Armenian Genocide vote in the House some years ago. Wonder what Hunter's contributions were for.

81. Alabama
Ala. Dems seek investigation into financing of anti-gay flier
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Democratic Party has asked state prosecutors to investigate the financing of a Republican flier that accused a Democratic candidate of supporting same-sex marriage because she failed to sign a pledge against it. The flier, sponsored by the Republican Legislative Committee, stated that Democrat Gloria Dolbare had not signed a Christian Coalition pledge to support a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages in the state. In a special election last month, Republican Nick Williams defeated Dolbare in the race for the House seat, vacated by the death last year of Dolbare’s husband, Jeff Dolbare. The flier said: “Let Gloria Dolbare know God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!” Democratic Party Chair Redding Pitt sent letters last week to Attorney General Troy King and to Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks saying that the Republican committee did not file a report five days before the election showing who paid for the ad, as required by state law.
http://www.washblade.com/2005/2-25/news/legislative/
Turns out that Ms. Dolbare doesn't support gay marriage and no one had every approached her about the pledge. It was nothing more than a bold faced lie in order to win a seat.

88. Coin dealer NOE, major GOP contributor..INDICTED
Major Republican Donor Indicted in Ohio

By JOHN SEEWER
The Associated Press
Thursday, October 27, 2005; 3:54 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio -- A coin dealer and major GOP donor at the center of a scandal in Ohio state government has been indicted in a federal investigation into contributions to President Bush's re-election campaign, his attorney said Thursday.

The grand jury was examining whether Tom Noe skirted campaign finance laws by having others donate money for him. Federal laws limit individual contributions to $2,000.

This 2001 file photo shows Thomas W. Noe at the Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. A federal grand jury has indicted Noe, a prominent GOP contributor in an investigation into contributions to President Bush's re-election campaign, his attorney, Jon Richardson said Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005. (AP Photo/Will Shilling) File) (Will Shilling - AP)
Noe's lawyer, Jon Richardson, said he did not have any immediate details on the indictment. The charges were to be announced later in the day by the FBI and the Justice Department, and federal prosecutors would not comment before then.

Noe is also under investigation over an ill-fated $50 million investment in rare coins he managed for the state workers' compensation fund. Noe has acknowledged that up to $13 million is missing, and Ohio's attorney general has accused him of stealing as much as $6 million.

The coin dealer contributed more than $105,000 to Republicans, including Bush and Gov. Bob Taft, during the last campaign.

The Republican National Committee announced in June that Bush was returning $4,000 in campaign contributions from Noe.

An investigation into Noe's coin investments led to the governor's conviction in August on charges he failed to report golf outings and other gifts.

93. Extremely interesting! Found a former boss
in the Indymedia link to the Bush I White House sex scandal of 1989. The article in the link, which appeared in the Washington Times, indicates that during the investigation of the call-boy sex ring, they found that one of their own reporters, Stanley Mark Tapscott, was involved in the sex ring and resigned.
This creep, whom I knew as Mark Tapscott, was one of the most nasty rightwing bastards I've ever encountered. I quit my job (at a local paper in Maryland) because I couldn't stand working for him.
For the past few years Tapscott has been some sort of major turd at the Heritage Foundation - why are we not surprised?

What is the matter with these people? They preach "family values" when what they really value is raping children.

94. You forgot T-RICKY Santorum and his Cybergate Scandal.....
T-Ricky was "honored" recently by CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) by being named one of the "Top 13 Most CORRUPT Members of Congress."

95. "They're just Better People"
This is amazing work, thanks so much--it will be hitting the inboxes of a couple Repubs I know--although I am sure they will just sputter something about Clinton in response.
