Delta Vulnerabilities Examined

Washington, DC -The Subcommittee on Water and Power will hold an oversight hearing on protecting California's Central Valley and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta from natural catastrophes. The hearing will be held on Thurs., Oct. 20 at 1:00 p.m. in 1324 Longworth House Office Building.

In light of the recent catastrophic events in New Orleans, the Subcommittee Members will examine the vulnerability of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Much of the Delta and Sacramento are protected by a system of levees. An earthquake or flood could overwhelm vulnerable infrastructure and result in loss of lives and property, economic devastation and severe water supply disruption.

"Under current conditions, it is not a question of 'if' our levees fail, but 'when.' This scenario is not acceptable," said House Resources Committee Chairman Richard W. Pombo (R-CA). "In 1997, I walked through flooded areas in my district. We must do everything possible to avoid more floods. Every option must be on the table, including more levee infrastructure funding, more storage, and making sure human safety concerns are factored in when levee repairs run into the Endangered Species Act. I applaud my colleague, Subcommittee Chairman Radanovich, for taking the initiative on this extremely important issue."

Federal, state and local entities share management responsibilities for the levees, dams, and pumping plants in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The hearing will focus on future role of the federal government in working with state and local interests to avoid a Katrina-like disaster in California.

"The entire state's water supplies depend on a very fragile but integrated water supply system," said Subcommittee Chairman George Radanovich (R-CA). "As a result, what happens in the Delta doesn't stay in the Delta and millions of Californians' drinking water supplies are impacted. Californians have asked for and deserve real solutions to this growing problem."

I was born in Stockton and have lived there off and on my entire life. I'm there two or three times a year. There's nothing wrong with the levies or the delta.

5. There are problems with the levees in the delta

There was a sizable breach last year in the Jones tract (San Joaquin County.)
But I also view anything Pombo promotes as highly suspect. Pombo will use any excuse to blame the Endangered Species Act.
