Poll question: Arianna Huffington: 2008: Will Al Gore Be the Anti-Hillary?
This thread gave me the idea to do a poll.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2161887

The article that inspired it was by Huffington (http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20051012/cm_huffpost/008708) about Al Gore becoming the Anti-Hillary candidate in 2008.

The idea of Gore vs Clinton in 2008 certainly presents a wealth of delicious story lines: The former Number 2 running against his Number 1's wife. Gore taking down Hillary as payback for the pall Monicagate cast over 2000. Gore as "the new New Nixon" (Gore will be the same age in 2008 as Tricky Dick was in 1968). Automaton Al remaking himself as progressive firebrand. Passion vs. polling.

That got me wondering, how would fellow DU's vote if the choice came down to Gore and Hillary?

And for all of you Clark fans out there, he can be named Sec. of Defense or Sec. of State by either candidate. And we can have Attorney General John Edwards too!

Who do you support...Al Gore or Hillary Clinton?

1. Al always kicks butt in these polls, but he says he won't run...

"I have absolutely no plans and no expectations of ever being a candidate again," Gore told reporters after giving a speech at an economic forum in Sweden.

3. "He wants to be begged to run."
US News & World Report: Don't Count Al Gore Out

Thursday, 13 October 2005
From U.S. News & World Report
by Paul Bedard

Al Gore's declaration this week in Stockholm that he doesn't plan to run for president has done nothing to dampen moves by friends and allies to talk him into a 2008 race. In fact, they tell Whispers, it's hardened their belief that he wants to run. But, they said, his comments suggest that he isn't interested in a traditional bid for the presidency: He wants to be begged to run. "I'm not discouraged at all by what he said," said one of the Gore advocates Whispers talked with. This week, Gore was in Stockholm blasting the Bush administration and talking about his political plans. He said: "I have absolutely no plans and not (sic) expectations of ever being a candidate again." Allies said that left the door wide open to being wooed. "He doesn't want to be embarrassed and he won't just slowly tip-toe into the race. He wants the whole thing set up for him and that will be easy to do," said our tipster. How? Those advocating a Gore candidacy believe that he already has the issues and a top leadership team in place. But they feel he needs to be convinced that there are enough donors not likely to back Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton that would move to his side to make his bid unbeatable. That, said the advocates, is their first job and they predicted that there are scores of high-tech, media and corporate donors willing to step forward to help Gore.

15. Nothing like a RW source to tell us what a Dem wants to do
:sarcasm:

Why would I disrespect Gore enough to believe he is lying?

6. And he said further in the same interview....
..."I don't completely rule out some future interest, but I don't expect to have that," Gore said.

Expectations can change.

9. Let me be clear: I'd work for Al in a heartbeat, but I'd be surprised...
if he ran. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised.

4. My feeling
is that the only people that think Hillary will be the nominee are Republicans. I hear it on Faux News all the time, or Scarborough saying it. Most Democrats I know don't want her to run.

13. Yeah...Been Gettin' That Nasty Feeling too...
Don't get me wrong...I really do like Hillary--although I disagree with the majority of her votes in Congress, including, but not limited to her vote to give shrub the authority to go to war in Iraq, and I was more than just a bit pissed off with her trying to go after the entertainment industry to censor the movie and music industry (I believe in pro-choice on ALL levels in society, and still have faith Americans can think for themselves)--and I still deeply respect her, but to be real honest here, if she listens to those polls, and tries a run for the WH in 2008, I'm afraid we'll be gettin' ourselves another Repuke for President/pResident (even IF we can get our right-wingnut-privatized election machines to work properly).

The Clintons are the best weapons the Repukes have in igniting fury within their (currently waffling) ignorant base--even better than scaring the bejeezes outta them with the "terrorists under your bed" crap--and mobilize them to support a candidate they probably don't know crap about since seeing red can't be beneficial to any amount of "clear sight" which is necessary in order to make a sound, good judgment, and are too focused in their deep-seated hatred "all things Clinton" and have them vote for a sockpuppet just as long as it's "republican" just to ensure another Clinton doesn't make it to the WH.

The Repubs NEED Hillary to run, since schrub is sending the sheeple of their party scampering around like chickens with their heads lopped off!

And NOTHING mobilizes the base, and Clinton-hating right-wingnuts better, than announcing that another Clinton is making a play for the WH.

Just my gut-feeling here...

7. Just can't get behind someone who supports the Iraq war...
For me, Gore, Clark, or Feingold are the ones I'd get behind in a primary. They (along with Dean) are the only one's who have been outspoken against the war. Our party should not back anyone who's complicit in Bush's war, in my opinion.

12. Gore rules-- no longer the Gore of 2000
This guy fires up a crowd with more toughness and vigor than a general in the Revolutionary War. He's been smart about the Iraq War from Day 1, balanced on national security, clever with his tax proposals, working to expand educational opportunities for the poor, and a diligent environmentalist. Gore will fire up the base and the nation as a whole. And unlike Lieberman, Hillary and the other DLCers, Gore wouldn't send a big fraction of the Dem base to vote for a third-party candidate in disaffection.
