"Tack right on public displays of the Ten Commandments and the Pledge of Allegiance, however, and nothing whatsoever of consequence will happen.

"Besides which, if you're going to piss off some liberal interest group, it might as well be Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, since they're good at getting media play but don't actually control any non-trivial quantity of votes, money, or anything else meaningful. On top of all that, the liberal position on the Ten Commandments is ridiculously unpopular. Way more unpopular than the bien pensant press seems to realize. Most Republicans think it's wrong. So do most independents. And so do ... most Democrats!

I know he's a hard-bitten realist, but this is too much. How did I ever miss what a calculating, clueless jackass he (suddenly) seems to be?

DOH! Forgot the link:

1. You know, I read the name
all the time and don't know who he is. Explain?

And what is he saying here, that it's fine to display the ten C's?

2. He's a very young writer for the American Prospect
who got started in the blogosphere.

He's like Kevin Drum, who also got his start in the blogosphere.

Matthew Yglesias isn't to be confused with either Julio or Enrique Iglesias. :)

3. He writes for The American Prospect

I'm not entirely sure what he's saying: the last sentence is confusing. He seems to be saying that there is no political price to be paid for dems supporting public displays of the 10 commandments, and that even democrats don't support the liberal position of being against it. Again, :wtf:

Maybe he's just trying to be snarky and I'm misinterpreting his remarks, but I suspect that's not the case.

5. Pretty sure he means JUST SAY that you do to get elected because it really
doesn't matter about your opinion since those are ONLY Supreme Court issues that will never be decided by the legislature, and if a legislature tried it would end up at the SC anyway.

4. It's kind of par for the course
for many bloggers (or bloggers-turned-professional writers), as they don't always know what they are talking about.

And a lot of these "name" bloggers want so much to curry favor with the establishment media, they will write anything to get that recognition and approval.

It's called careerism, in other words.
