WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence officials who released a letter purporting to be from an al Qaeda leader to Iraq insurgency leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi this week said on Friday they could not account for a passage that has raised doubts about the document's authenticity.

The July 9 dated letter, which U.S. officials say was written by al Qaeda's second in command, Ayman al-Zawahri, appears near its close to urge the Iraq insurgent leader to send greetings to himself if visiting the Iraqi city of Falluja.

"My greetings to all the loved ones and please give me news of Karem and the rest of the folks I know," says an unedited English translation posted at www.dni.gov, the office Web site of U.S. intelligence chief John Negroponte.

"And especially, by God, if by chance you're going to Falluja, send greetings to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi," it states.

In other words, in this "letter from Ayman Zawahiri to Zarqawi", it appears that Zawahiri is asking Zarqawi to send greetings to Zarqawi.

How is Zarqawi supposed to "send greetings" to HIMSELF?

More Bush Regime phony baloney plastic banana goodtime rock and roll.

3. man, what a tough crowd. One little typo, and you guys jump on
the CIA.
Give 'em a break, already.

Look, I promise, the next time they try this trick, they will get it right. Trust me on this one. By that time, they may even find someone willing to play the role of Zarqawi. Or the 1,248th #2 man of Al Qaida.

5. I know this is from the translation, but what is this obsession

of our administration & military with using the word "FOLKS"??? I wonder if there is actually a word in Arabic for "folks"? I would more expect "brothers", or something like it, in a letter from/to a Muslim leader - not "and the rest of the folks I know"! How folksy, folksy, folksy don'cha know!

7. You know what - I think the letter is genuine. BUT....
I think it exposes something the US inteligence agencies don't want exposed - Zarqawi is NOT the leader of Al Qeada in Iraq!

I am willing to bet the intel agencies have NO IDEA who this was sent to, but they now know that their knowledge of the Al Qaeda network in Iraq is totally incomplete.

It seems to me that this letter suggests that Zarqawi is in fact only an area leader, thus all the 2nd in commands they have captured or killed in Iraq may actually only be lowly liutenants in a single Al Qaeda group, and not the high ranking members they THOUGHT they were killing.
