Poll question: What's to be the results of the 2006 elections?
What will be the results of the decline in polls and renewed media consciousness?

1. Folks, they still own the voting machines
if the elections were open and fair, we'd take back the house and the senate.

but that's not the case.

31. If the elections were open and fair? WTHeck?
What do you mean 'IF'?

Are you saying there is a chance the 2006 elections might be rigged to favor one candidate over another?

How in the world could that happen?

Then the impeachment hearings begin....

Wouldn't it be too gerrymandered for the Dems to make significant gains?

I think that if and when Bush fires Fitzgerald, we will have a significant chance at winning the House but until then it's still a long ways away.

More seats are coming into contention because our candidates are high quality, appeal to alot of people and we have a new type of online activism. I feel more confident about winning than I did in 2002 or 2004.

"Don't supress the vote"

Hmmmm, what to say...... How 'bout there might be a few freepers who would come here and attempt to supress dem voter turnout using the e-voting scenario as a tool, but really, the one's who usually speak about the evoting say so as a warning, and are spot on, good democrats.

The question all of us need to be asking is: "Can the election be rigged?" Well? Can it?

17. Don't know for sure - I'm a Brit
with no deep understanding of US politics.

I'll say this though...if anyone thinks these bastards are going to relinquish power think again. The shit they pulled off to get the last election was nothing short of a bloodless coup d'etat. The stakes are now so damned high they are going to pull out the stops to hold on to what they have (sorry for mixing my metaphors...blame the French wine...those French people can't be trusted...hic!) and that will include some really nasty tricks.

You may not have a profound understanding of US politics but then most americans don't either....
The terms at large (like senators are elected, by the whole state) and by district (House of reps. members are elected by district) are enough to send most of them into seizures

21. Meh we wont make much back
You are all highly niave if you think that just because the republican party is losing popularity that that means we can take back both houses somehow.

The facts are this:

To take back the senate we would need to win every close seat and beat a another republican who at this point seems reasonably safe (ie. double digit leads). That is not entirely impossible but still highly improbably.

As for the house there are not that many competitive seats what with all the gerrymandering. We will basically have to win just about every competitive seat to take back the house too.

I put the odds on taking back both houses in 2006 at about 1/1000

22. We're on defense in the senate
It's extremely unreasonable to expect big gains in the senate next year. This is the cycle we already picked off the vulnerable GOP incumbents in states friendly or winnable for us, in 2000. We took over Michigan and Washington and Florida, etc. enroute to +5 net. Now we're expecting similar again among the same block of senate seats just 6 years later? Sorry, not going to happen. There are only 33 or 34 senate seats up every 2 years. If we pick up +5 again, like many are projecting/wishing, that would mean a net +10 or nearly 1/3 transfer among the same 33 seats to our side in a six year period. Every ounce of mathematical and probability logic screams to me that's basically impossible. I'll be happy to gain one or break even. Admittedly, I'm more numbers-oriented than cheerleader.

One year ago the conventional wisdom was we would be playing defense in 2006. Hint: everything tends to drift back to the beginning. The self-inflicted GOP problems of the past few months are not to be diminished, but I can't see them trumping the big picture realities: we are defending many more seats, had many close wins in 2000, and therefore can't expect significant gains in 2006.

23. Other...
Either the Repubs cheat using the voting machines or some terrorist attack happens before the election causing the American sheep to run to the arms of the GOP. So we lose even more seats in the Senate and House.

But then again, I'm a pessimist.. :o

Give me a break. Find me a poll where he doesnt have a double digit lead.

Frist??? Once again Harold Ford Jr is way behind in the polls.

Sure its possible that we could come back and win those but be realistic. Everyone here is saying that we will take back the senate when to do so we will have to close huge leads and win every currently close race.
