"we're fighting them over there rather than over here"
As an outsider (Australian) to US-style politics, I'm still trying to wrap my head around that talking point.

("Talking Point". Another American-ism I had to understand)

In other words, you're using US troops as BAIT. Luring terrorists away from blowing up people at home, and giving them a closer/easier target.

"Join the US Army today, and DRAW FIRE from your neighbours!"

Bait. I honestly don't understand how "we're fighting them over there..." could even BE a Talking Point, let alone an abolutely successful one.

1. It was a foolish statement that has been disporven too!
Shrub has tried to keep Americans scared ever since 9/11 and it was working too! We're not used to having attacks here, except for the occasional home grown ones, and were willing to accept any solution that made sense.

Then came the bombings in the London tube. London's been fighting along side of the US in Iraq, and it didn't work for them, huh? I think that destroyed this talking point, so you aren't likely to hear it much anymore.

3. Sadly, Bush used it this week
... when he spoke in the Rose Garden. What an IDIOT. Who gives this man his "talking points" anyways???

5. Who gives him his "talking points"?
Burl Rove - Karl's dumber but more law-abiding older brother.

2. Agree
... and I'm a US citizen. NOT a Bush supporter ... never was, never will be. But, that statement makes NO f'ing sense to me, even for one who would proclaim to be a Bush :patriot: ... NOT me... now f'ing way ... just saying that from a Bush patriot perspective, it still makes NO f'ing sense to me. I say if we're going to fight them, well, let's fight them here. Maybe people will get a better understanding of war and do whatever it takes to prevent it in the future. I don't want war, never have, never will. But, it makes no sense to fight "them" over "there" instead of here, especially when the US provokes the war for no f'ing reason.

4. "...over there rather than over here"

...is why I'm not worried about subway bombings or chemical/biological attacks. That's what we're in Iraq for, right? Right? Hell, we don't even get warnings unless bush's poll numbers are down - or some Republican is getting indicted.

*edit for typo

6. Bush is still using that meme ...
... because it works. Don't ask me to explain how it works. I just know it does. I know too many intelligent people who believe that using the military as lethal bait in Iraq, and thereby preventing attacks on the homeland, justifies the loss of both Iraqi and American lives.

Ignore the power of this meme at your peril!

7. It's a stupid talking point easy to believe. I have a friend whose brother
is in the military. An officer up there in years - age wise. He told her that and she told the rest of us that. I broke out laughing and gave her my opinion. It's easy to believe as long as there are no terrorist attacks here.

What gets me is - remeber the DC sniper? A guy and his teenage son has DC in particular and the nation in general in a panic for 6 weeks was it? I can't believe that al Qaeda or whomever is too poor to get a sniper or two into this country and just shoot people. They are not that dumb. They are not that poor. So who really are the terrorists? Because they always help when * numbers are down.

8. I don't see how it makes sense to ANYBODY!
1. Why did we go someplace that didn't HAVE "them" there? Is it fair to the Iraqi people to use them as flypaper?

2. Why didn't we fight them in AFGHANISTAN where we might have at least caught bin Laden and all the people who have gone to Iraq to kill our troops anyway? He could've at least sounded a tiny bit more sensible, but it still makes no sense to think they can't still come here.

3. We're on "orange alert." WHY? We're supposed to be safe because we're fighting them 'there' instead of here.

4. When we ARE attacked next, let's see how Bush uses the attack for Americans to "rally around" him-so he wins either way.

5. Bush is an idiot. So is anyone who buys his bull.
