Bush Poll Numbers Hit New Low As He Loses Independents
President Bush's job approval rating has fallen to his lowest rating ever.
37 percent now approve of the job he is doing as president, while 58 percent disapprove.
Those in his own party are still overwhelmingly positive about his performance (nearly 80 percent approve),
but the president receives little support from either Democrats or Independents. And while views of President Bush have
lately not changed much among Republicans or Democrats, his approval rating among Independents has dropped 11 points
since just last month, from 40 percent to 29 percent now.

I try to give people benefit of the doubt,

3. Well, to be fair, some aren't so stupid.

After all the Rich should be pleased with Bush. He's given them massive tax cuts and wants to make them permanent. He's trying to eliminate the estate tax. He's done nothing to stem the movement of money abroad or other tax avoidance schemes.

Businesses (and their voter-owners) should be pleased with him too.
He's rolled back consumer protection regulations, pandered to the drug industry, passed "tort reform" (making consumer class actions more difficult to bring against big businesses), passed "bankruptcy reform" (making it extremely difficult to discharge consumer indebtedness), and dolled out defense contracts like candy.

Illegal immigration has been terrific for Republicans. Cheap labor is always good for business and Bush has tried to keep that around by making it next to impossible for the illegals to get mainstreamed.

Evangelicals should be pleased with Bush too. He's put up a lot of ultra-conservative judges on federal court benches and, indeed, may be on the cusp of doing so in the Supreme Court and overturning Roe. Moreover, God talks to him and tells him to do things -- something that should please Evangelicals. He's also taken anti-gay civil ceremony and marriage positions that should please the Fundamentalists no end.

But, if you are a Fiscal Republican concerned about spending and balanced budgets, or if you're a Libertarian who thinks a woman should have determine whether she wants to bring a child into the world or not, or if you're a Paleoconservative who doesn't believe America doesn't have a mission to democratize the Islamic world, well, then you might have cause for concern. Why are you still supporting him? How has Bush advanced your agenda?
