A contrarian view - allow Miers to be confirmed.
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 03:50 PM by Husb2Sparkly
This column from MSNBC poses an alternate view of what's going on now.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9579542/site/newsweek/

I also think she was nominated for reasons other than her stance on certain issues - particularly the right to choice. Discussed here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2130826

Now, my own internal jury is still out on this nomination. It is too early and we know too little about her.

What I can't do is get all in a tizzie over this and start screaming for opposing her outright. So far, all I've seen is the speculation and assumptions I mention in the thread linked, above.

This woman could be the next O'Conner ....... or she could be our worst nightmare.

But before we oppose, and if the linked thread above is even partly true, we may lose by winning, if we, through knee-jerk reaction, define 'win' as seeing her nomination go down.

After all ...... do we think Lannie Guinier is in the running?

I may be a majority of one, but I'll wait and see before I decide.

(edited to add) A link to this well-reasoned thread, too:

1. You know, ideologically speaking, she may not be that bad for us.
But her pedigree as a made woman in the Texas Republican Mafia TM just makes me a little bit nauseous. She's just so obviously right there in the middle of all that nasty mess.

Hey, what are grounds for impeaching a Supreme Court Justice? If she gets put on the bench and then something really slimy comes out can we get rid of her?

2. I'm not sure about impeaching a supreme .......
The impeachng of a president is, almost by definition, political. I don't know if there are differnt standards for supremes.

4. She just smells.

She has eau du Tejas Politics allllll over her, and the connections aren't that hard to find. I mean, John Roberts was a Bushco insider as well, but it wasn't THIS obvious. The nanosecond I heard about the lottery connection I thought "hm, smells bad."

I just don't see the point about nominating her. It's just naked personal loyalty.

5. Nope
The only Sup Ct. Justice that I know was impeached, Samuel Chase in 1805, was pretty much a political hatchet job as well.

6. She couldn't help
where she was born. ;) (assuming she born in Texas). She was raised a catholic I guess. That might mean she less evangelical than some are painting her. Anyways Sparkly's mate, I'm with ya.

8. Got nothing to do with the fact that she's a Texan
and everything to do with her ties to TRMPAC (Delay's beleagured PAC, connections to money laundering) as well as the fact that she was the leader of the state lottery commission -- where there are LOTS of bodies buried and LOTS of corruption going on there.

Like I said, Texas Republican Mafia. It exists.

3. For now we should let the right wing work itself into a frenzy
Powerline is actually pissed off because she is a woman, and several other pundits are screaming in rage because she's not fanatically partisan.

7. You aren't a majority of one by a long shot.

edit to add - I want to know more. I'm not giving her a pass or anything but I'm not freaking out either.
