1. I'm willing to bet it will be Gonzalez
I think Bush has wanted to nominate him all along. Gonzalez is young and has, like Roberts, decades of tenure on the Court.

It would be a nasty fight in the Senate, but I don't think Bush cares at this point.

2. It troubles me that 50% of our population is that of the feminine gender
Yet, no one is insisting that we need at least ONE MORE woman on the Supreme Court? Guess Women are a political minority group behind Blacks, and perhaps soon to be Hispanics?

5. I agree with you.
I think there should be at least one more woman on the Court.

But I do think Bush will nominate Gonzalez instead. I think the idea of nominating the first Hispanic on the Court will greatly appeal to him.

10. Bush desperately wants to score points with Latino voters...
...the "Guest Worker" program went nowhere (even though it keeps getting floated as something he is "working on")...

Add that to the fact that Gonzales is 100% bought and sold as far as his "loyalty" to Bush and his agenda is concerned, and that leads to me having my doubts over Bush selecting a woman (unless he can find a qualified Hispanic woman, that is).

The White House has been attempting to paint a picture of Bush "working hard" to select a candidate, but it's pretty obvious that he's looking for the one that will yield the biggest "political capital" payoff.

6. That's been my guess all along...
...and all of the "pundits" have been saying "Bush CAN'T lose on this nomination"...

Which means another 50% "Yea" vote from the Dems, just like with Roberts, or Bush makes good on the threat to pull the "nuclear option" and place his little buddy in the position.

There have also been people like weasel Ben Ginsberg who have been repeating the Rove talking points about Bush ("He's not DAMAGED, look at the Roberts nomination")...so this will be about proving a point. It will be about Bush showing his base that he is still "in command."

I think that Bush probably WANTS a "nasty fight in the Senate" at this point...all of that built-up hostility over the (ACCURATE) way his Katrina response was portrayed in the media and such. Take a look at the Hurricane Rita photos. He may have been flying back and forth to every photo op imaginable, but this was one angry fake Texan.

Part of me is hoping that I can come back to this thread after 8:00 and say "it's not Gonzales," but I dunno...

8. I would be surprised if it was Gonzalez
With scrubbos popularity so low, his only real supporters are those religious nutjobs and they've made it clear that they oppose Gonzalez (their motto has been Gonzalez is Spanish for Souter). I don't think he's willing to alienate them.

9. I'm going to predict Janice Rogers Brown
What he needs right now is a huge battle to get his base rallying behind him in the Senate, and also to distract the country from his failings at home and in Iraq.
