CNN's Miles O'Brien grilled General Myers about Iraq this morning
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 09:51 AM by npincus
I was really pleased and surprised to hear O'Brien express such open cynicism about the progress (Miles' position; a lack thereof) whether we are really succeeding (Miles expressed real doubt) and whether we have made things worse by the whole Invasion (Males argued that there were no terrorists in Iraq pre-9/11 and in effect we have created this "front on terror"). He also said that the point "we are fighting them there so we don't fight them over here" "didn't make sense to him", that terrorists are everywhere already.

Did anyone see this? I think he's letting his true colors emerge, which may not be as RW as we believe. Or is CNN management encouraging more dissent? I know the MSM is generally rotten, but I don't think we would have heard this kind of interview a few months (weeks) ago. O'Brien really stuck it to the old guy.

Anybody else see it?

1. Miles was good!

I'd written him off because of the way has talked to Nagin. In this instance, Miles did really well and said everything I would have!

8. I think he's trying to make a name for himself by brow-beating officials..
which may be a good sign, actually.

2. I don't know
I saw it, but not all of it. Part of me thought he was asking the tough questions but then part of me thought he was just asking the questions and then letting Myers spout bullshit.

Like I said, I didn't see all of it, but did he call him out when he essentially tried to connect Iraq to 9/11. If he did, then great, if not then it was just like the old "Some People Say" crap that leads to someone telling us how wrong that opinion is.

I hope I am just being too cynical.

3. i did not see any of it.
but in my opinion you have it right. there are some journalists/tv talk heads/etc. out there who play the fence. they seem to act tough but then go bland and let the bush mafia and their minions get away with stuff...

without having heard the program... i vote for you probably have it right.

4. I'm cynical, too, but I thought O'Brien did his job this morning.
certainly Myers deflected all questions with the same old bullshit, but i haven't heard those questions asked, and in quite that way, on CNN. I choose to be an optimist this morning and hope there is some sea change taking place... perhaps CNN and FUX NEWS will no longer be interchangeable... cynical motive: perhaps the MSM are hedging their bets that the power may switch to the other team and want to appear "fair".

Speaking of bullshit: MOST ASTOUNDING BULLSHIT of the day (forgot to put this in my post), he actually said (basically) the soldiers had "shoes" "and all the other equipment they need" and was dismissive of all the chatter about soldiers not having the arms, prtection, gear that they need. Astounding! Up is Down, and Down is Up!

And he (was) in charge! (Retiring today)

7. In all fairness
I googled Myers, and on the 27th, there was an article on yahoo, about Gen.Myers...USAF general..not Army...so what would he have had to do with Abu Graib?...not being a smart ass...really want to know..Would he have still had oversight on something like prisoner treatment, being done by the Army...

The article stated he intended to retire this week...and also said he was cautioning against modification of Posse Comitatus...I got the feeling he didn't think it should be done...

9. Here's a rundown of what was said
Not direct quotes, but this is pretty close. He destroyed Myers on every point he tried to make.

Myers: They're all Terrorists.

O'Brien: There wasn't Terrorists in Iraq before the War.

Myers: We're fighting them there so we don't fight them here

O'Brien: All due respect, that's BS. Terrorists are getting the best training fighting US troops in Iraq.

Myers: We can't leave now.

O'Brien: Was it worth 2000 troops?

Myers: Iraqis forces are being trained to take over.

O'Brien: What Iraqi forces?

Myers: Iraqi forces have twice the casualty rate of US troops, so that shows how good they are.

O'Brien: That actually doesn't seem that they're very good, then.

etc...
