My Elementary definition of a Moderate
There are really two-types of moderates

1.Republican Moderate: RARE at best
This is someone who is possibly religious, generally supports their party, but is not so stuck on stupid that they believe everything that the Republicans spew out.The may live in urban cities and are exposed to the real america: the diverse America. So,they are not quick to judge because they may actually know some liberals and may have friends who are liberals and get a long with them. They are also open to others "lifestyles" and will accept them, until it's time to vote. Then, the RED shows.

2.Democratic Moderate: More common than a Repub Moderate
This person is also possibly religious, generally liberal and supports their party. They try not to fit into the liberal stereotype by openly expressing their religious views as well as note that they realize that everyone has a right to their own beliefs. They may not agree with homosexuality or abortion, but when it comes time to vote, they know the difference between the bible and the Constitution. They will vote democratic because they believe every American has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

That's what I think

1. I like the definitions- although fiscal (no or low deficits) are important
- and for many - are the only "moderate" part of the definition, with the liberal moderate both knowing the difference between the bible and the Constitution, and being a very strong advocate of individual rights.

2. Respectfully disagree
In the Northeast, Republican moderates (even liberalRepublicans) still exist in strong numbers. Some are in urban areas but most dwell in the suburbs. Not usually rural animals. Upper-middle class is the most common economic band. They are NOT the "new money" types.

They are more libertarian leaning: Fiscal responsibility and socially progressive and they are INDEPENDENT voters. The ONLY reason Kerry didn't capture more of them was the timing issue -- too many did buy into the 'terra, terra, terra' mantra.

I know plenty of Republicans for Kerry supporters/voters!!!!

On the other hand, I unfortunately also know Catholic Dems in Western PA who fell for the 'Kerry is not a good Catholic' sh*t. These are mostly Irish Catholics and Eastern European Catholics.

Maybe it's a Northeast thing....but that's my experience.
