Howared Dean on Nightline (transcript)
In case anyone is interested...

I've got a transcript of Howard Dean's appearance on Nightline here
http://shadowbfa.blogspot.com/

Last night on Nightline, Howard Dean was interviewed by Ted Koppel in response to Tom DeLay's indictment by a Texas Grand Jury. I recorded the interview, and you can find my transcript below.

Koppel: A little over four months ago Governor Dean, you were prepared to see Tom DeLay in jail without benefit of an indictment or a trial. Uhh…I mean, you already had him there. So, what’s your reaction now that there is at least an indictment? (Editor's note: Not only is that a bratty question, but it was executed badly. If you’re going to go the asshat route, you really need to finesse it better than that.)

2. Thanks for posting this.
I missed it last night.

Could Koppel be any more antagonistic? What an asshole!

3. Dean stayed on message -- didn't accept Kopple's smarmy premise
Koppel: Let me ask you to keep your hat as Democratic National Chairman on for a moment, and give me a frankly partisan assessment of how, if at all, this can help the Democrats.

Dean: Well, I don’t think it helps the country at all—that’s the big issue. I mean, in times like these you kind of wince. This is not good for America.

4. Does ted koppel have to
work at being so disingenous or does it come natually? On the other hand he did ask the questions that led Dean to such powerful answers.

Very Good for Dean getting all that recorded history in there about the rethugs and their foul air of corruption..and he mentioned blunderdog in Iraq.

Someone talked about brownie as "blunderdog" but I think bush is top blunderdog.

5. Good for Dean
Is there a video of this? Hopefully Crooks and Liars will have one. I missed it. I think Dean is getting a lot better with the media. :) I don't think he's so nervous anymore. :) Good going!!

6. I hope there's a video,
as well. When a DUer alerted us it was on last I changed the channel from The Daily Show to Nightline and they were just closing up shop.

That's another reason this transcript is so precious to me..and I think you're right about Dean..he is really learning more and more as he goes. As it should be.

Thank you, mojogeorgo, for this transcript!

7. Oh, if only the other Dems could se what Howard sees
Howard has his finger on the issue that will return the House (at least) to the Democrats, if they follow his lead. (Which, so far, they never have.) Dems should focus on repug corruption and promise ethical reform in DC.

"Bush Republicans are incompetent crooks" is a campaign theme that ALL the electorate can understand.

That it happens to be obviously true just adds to its resonance.

8. This is the best strategy I saw from Dean.he knows what he is
doing.Read carefully how he responded:

snip

Koppel: Let me ask you to keep your hat as Democratic National Chairman on for a moment, and give me a frankly partisan assessment of how, if at all, this can help the Democrats.

Dean: Well, I don’t think it helps the country at all—that’s the big issue. I mean, in times like these you kind of wince. This is not good for America. We’ve had some terrible blows: we’ve had the President’s blunders in Iraq, we’ve had the disaster Katrina which embarrassed us in front of the whole world, and now the whole world again gets to see the leadership in both the White House and the House and the Senate be indicted or investigated or arrested for corruption. It’s not a great time for America. I think Americans are sick of this. And I can tell you one thing; when we get back in power, which I believe is going to be in 2006 in the congressional, we’re going to have some ethics reform in Washington. We’re going to get tough, and we’re going to get tough on everybody, not just Republicans. Enough of this in Washington! We ought to have substantial ethics reforms in Congress and to get serious about this.
