Specter praises Roberts for chief

WASHINGTON - Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) yesterday praised the choice of John G. Roberts Jr. to succeed William H. Rehnquist as chief justice, saying Roberts had "handled himself with real humility" thus far and predicting he would act as a consensus-builder on the Supreme Court.

Specter said he hoped Roberts "would work for consensus" and bring a new collegiality to the court as chief justice. He praised Roberts' modesty and the reserved tone of the judge's brief speech Monday, at the White House nomination announcement, when Roberts said he was "honored and humbled" to be named to succeed Rehnquist.
