Letter to the Editor of AZ Republic: Don't Let Fear Curb Freedoms!
Don't let fear curb freedoms
Jul. 29, 2005 12:00 AM

I'm unsure which is more frightening - the London bombings or The Republic's recent unofficial poll indicating nearly 70 percent of respondents would submit to warrantless searches to "improve" safety.

Increased use of surveillance cameras; warrantless searches of luggage at airports; warrantless searches of people on subways; detention without charges or trials; data mining; the drive to pass a new Patriot Act with no sunset provisions; the move toward national identification cards; all done in the name of safety and supported by the illogical belief that you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide.

Al-Qaida may or may not kill me, but that death could not be worse than witnessing my fellow citizens willingly surrender their hard-won liberty to hysteria and fear. - Michael Walker, Glendale
