What surprised me about Roberts
Aside from the fact that Roberts was not one of the major names being bandied about, there was one thing that really surprised me about Bush's nomination of Roberts for the Supreme Court.

Roberts was a WHITE MALE.

Typical of this misAdministration is the throwing out of the "sacrificial minority" so that the Repukes can claim that "Look, the Dems, the party of tolerance, are being racist/sexist/whateverist!" and run that as their flimsy cover for someone who was to the right of Falwell . . .

4. The next one will be either female or Hispanic
Unless he decides to trot out Janice Rogers Brown again. Then it's a two-for-one.

5. I think they went with Roberts because he's supposedly "easy" to pass
They were looking for a nominee that would keep both the gang of 14 quiet and the far right fundies happy. If the gang of 14 think he's "unobjectionable" enough, a filibuster is off the table.

The GOP is always more concerned about keeping its base happy than anything else - - so getting an anti-abortion, anti-affirmative action nominee is more important that trotting out a female, black or latino face, which is a way to win over independent white suburban voters and peel off Dem support in minority groups.
