So, what's our game plan? What do we do now?
We have to deal with:

1) Roberts (although what if we filibuster and they offer up someone worse?)

2) Treasongate (Not sure what to do here while we wait for Fitz to do his thing. Keep it alive in the media? More LTTEs connecting the dots to the big picture?)

3) Abu Ghraib photos (Talk this one up in the media too)

What else can we be doing to show the admin up to the people for what it really is... a MIS-administration? (I am thinking tackle some domestic issues like the economy.... everyone cares about the state of their wallet regardless of their poltics.)

1. we find out more about Roberts
during the hearings. I don't see a reason to oppose him already. We could have gotten a hell of a lot worse

Keep beating the drums on treasongate

2. First thing we do is bring the DLC to bear
It is because of Joe Lieberman and the "Owen 14" that the Senate has been hogtied in confirming recent justices.

3. Yes
We can keep LTTEs and all but I am losing faith in Americans. Most would rather give up liberty for SUVs and cheap plastic crap from Wal-Mart. Wish I had a bunker so I could live there and emerge once people wake up but I'd die of old age in there.

6. we frame the debate in a way that will splinter the Republican Party
Rove - keep talking about it and don't let it disappear from the news.

Roberts - highlight any and every comment he has made that will piss off the evangelicals. apparently he commented in 2003 that he has no desire to overturn RvW and that his 1991 brief was against RvW because it was written for his client. I personally don't buy it, but the more we can splinter the right wingers on this issue, the better. The more outraged we look, the more smug they'll be.

Abu Ghraib photos - I'm at a loss...did the new pix come out yet?

8. Your #2 -- as far as splintering
I like your thinking! Would it splinter more though NOT to act outraged, but rather to say, "Oh fine, he's okay, he's all for Roe v. Wade?"

Or not?

Hard to say.

10. exactly. I'll still write my Senators against this nomination, BUT...
My LTTE's will discuss my "outrage" over Roberts' flip-flop on abortion and how I had hoped that Bush had the moral clarity to nominate someone who truly was pro-life. ;) When I talk to the small handful of evangelical and/or conservative friends/family members, I'll express my "relief" that Roberts flip-flopped on the abortion issue.

We also need to find other issues that might piss off the neocons and the religious zealots.

16. They seem to be taking the "represented his clients, so we don't know
how he feels" tac. (What I heard from the latest HF blonde on Jim Lehrer).

We can just assume he's pro Roe--and we should; loudly!

" .......... that will piss off the evangelicals."

Go further .... have a few Dems actually praise him.

Rove wants us to be screaming so as to take the light off him. Let's give them a second front in the culture wars ...... with their own efungelical nutjob base.

12. We can bank on the DLC to do the praising
Drudge is headlining an article with the headline: "Bush Calls for Civility" and while I'm sure Bush probably did say that, we all know that civility from the left will be a disaster for him right now...we could truly politically kill him with kindness if we play our cards right.

All battles from this day forth should have the ultimate goal of creating problems within the Republican party.

Time to play up the Washington INSIDER angle. What I heard from the Republicans and their poodles in the media over and over tonight already.

Big and, too--how can he be that well=known and NOT have opinions on Supreme Court decisions (as Schumer hinted at)?

21. Other splintering issues:
By contrast, Roberts, with 20 months on the D.C. Circuit, has few opinions or other writings that have attracted enemies. As a result, some conservatives have made unflattering comparisons between Roberts and Supreme Court Justice David Souter, whose short stint on the 1st Circuit before being appointed in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush failed to reveal Souter's moderate-to-liberal leanings on some issues

MEME: ROBERTS IS THE NEXT SOUTER.

Mark Levin, author of "Men in Black," a new conservative critique of the Supreme Court, sees no conflict and is a fan of Roberts. "In the short period he has been on the court, John Roberts has shown he does not bring a personal agenda to his work. He follows the Constitution, and he is excellent."

MEME: ROBERTS IS NO SCALIA.

In the July 2004 decision Barbour v. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Roberts joined Merrick Garland -- a Clinton appointee -- in deciding that sovereign immunity did not bar a D.C employee with bipolar disorder from suing the transit agency under federal laws barring discrimination against the disabled. Conservative Sentelle dissented.

MEME: ROBERTS JOINED A CLINTON APPOINTEE...YES, THAT CLINTON. CLINTON CLINTON CLINTON CLINTON CLINTON.

24. we drop the muthafunkin hammer on their sorry asses
or something to that effect.

We take Rove out behind the shed and beat his ass with media attention until the charges come down.

We break every shovel we can get our hands on raking muck, slinging poo, and making John Roberts wish he'd stayed a two-bit partisan hack.

When the Abu Ghraib photos come out, we blow them up and paste 'em to the tops of commercial trucks and vans where the won't be seen by people on the ground but WILL be seen by every damn traffic-chopper in the country.

Sorry for the overuse of lame analogies and mixed metaphors.

25. We educate America.
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 06:45 PM by Gregorian
Lately it keeps coming back to me- the difference between an educated public, and one that cannot think.
I grew up in a democratic family, in silicon valley, in the best schools, with A's in math, and extracurricular activities. And I didn't know how to think. I didn't know why I had gone to school. To get a job? Was that it? Who cares. We aren't teaching the important things. Like the fact that we are all here together. It's not about ME and MY job. It's about US on this earth. And until we teach kids to look at the big picture, the rest is meaningless. Right now we have a dumbed down public, and a president who is all about me, me, me.
What we need is more than schools. We need a society. Culture. All the things we are ignoring. We build jails. We scare kids and demonize them by screwing around with a drug war. The real threat is not drugs, but rotten lying politicians, and taxes spent on military, and a society so committed to having the newest car, and high priced houses, that there is no TIME for living. And what leisure Americans have is low quality. McThis and McThat. Crap entertainment. Look at Europe and you'll see a bright young group of students. Kids who know history, science, politics, art. We do not have that. It's because of what we value. We value ease and comfort. Life is difficult, and fun. But the corporations are telling us something different. And everybody is on the money bandwagon. Let's slow down and start over.
